Travel to AZ. military base

Need some advise: daughter is married to 1st Sergent at a military base in Tucson. She's having an operation next month and I would like to be there to offer support and the wife and I can offer a little after care. I do not want to be so close to the border without protection. We have reciprocity with New Mexico and Arizona. What about Border Patrol and anybody have any idea what or where I could store the weapon(s) off base? I live in East Texas, the longest part of the 2 day drive will be crossing Texas. Thanks for any ideas.

Border Patrol won't be a problem, I get checked every time I go through on my way to LA... Just hand them your DL, and your CHL if they ask for ID. They will take it from there...

As far as storing your firearm, you have a couple of options:

1. Talk to one of the gunshops, close by before you leave and see if you can work something out.
2. You can also store your firearm on the base in the armory, but that can be a pain to get it in and back out on your daily trips off of base.
2. Another idea that I have personally used is renting a safety deposit box in Bank of America that was really close by base.
4. Last, see if you can find a forum like this in Arizona, and post a similar add requesting someone who lives there to hold it for you.

Call ahead and ask the base. Some bases let you lock up your firearm, other bases do not. It is up to the base commander.

That is a great idea that I wish I would have thought of. I don't have any idea how much that would be or how much privacy one has when doing something like that. It could be interesting unholstering to store it there.

Actually, I thought it was a pretty good idea, too...unholster and unload in the vehicle prior to entering and put it in a small, locked case. That way, no one should get into a tizzy over it. I'm sure you'll have to make prior arrangements with the bank about the nature of the item, though.

I don't have any experience with Safety Deposit boxes. Is it any of their business what one puts in there? Are banks off limits for guns in AZ? IDK

Does you DD live on base I'm assuming. If I remember correctly, if you live on base, you can still have weapons in your house. All you may have to do is have your daughter register the weapon with PMO and base command and you should be okay. Especially if she takes the weapon and puts it in her vehicle, but it's worth asking. Is it Army, Marines or Air Force? I'd make a call to the base command office and find out or have her call.

PMO NEVER checked his vehicle usually and as long as he had a base decal, they waved him on in and did not stop him and check his vehicle. Even right after 9/11, he MAYBE got stopped and searched his vehicle two or three times, but it wasn't much.

Yeah, but that's like trying to guess when we're going to robbed and only carry then. I probably wouldn't be searched, but it would be just my luck that some new guy was in training and they decided to stop me and search my car just for training.

Yeah, I had an employee that was never searched at the Red River depot --- until the day that he was searched and charged. He could have declared the gun at the guard shack and locked it in the locker there, but he thought it took too much time. . .
