Gun Show Dealer Inventory - Is There A Secret?

Post by katmandu »

OK, this will probably be the first of many dumb questions I'll eventually ask, but I can't resist. :confused5

When visiting a local dealer's retail location, they always have a decent selection of handguns on display, especially for the makes & models they probably sell a lot of.

But their displays aren't packed to the brim - there's plenty of open, unused space where they could display more if they wanted.

Now when I see this same dealer's tables at a gun show, the inventory there is much larger than what they have on display in the store. But the inventory at the store is still there too, same as always, during the gun show. At the shows, they often even have models available that they don't carry in their retail location at all.

So, where does that show inventory come from? I understand they may have back of store and warehouse merchandise like other retailers. But if that's the case, wouldn't it make sense to have a lot of that inventory on display in the retail location all the time, except on gun show days? You know, to better their chances of parting me from my money?

I asked them about it once, and they replied "The show inventory comes from all over."

Was that evasive? Am I on to some great gun dealer secret I'm not supposed to know about? Is there a cat clawing to get out of the bag here? :???:

Thanks to anyone "in the know" for solving whatever mystery there may be !

Think about it a little more........

If you were a gun shop owner that also did gun shows (every gun show in your State) you would probably have a nice trailer or at least a covered pickup bed.

Now, since you are doing a gun show practically EVERY weekend, are you gonna pull all shop guns from the shelves and everything you may have in the back room and load up your trailer/truck? This of course means that you spend a LOT of time moving stuff from one place to the other and that your store will have to be closed EVERY weekend because you have no guns there while you are at the gun show.

My LGS is a big gun show seller/buyer. His inventory in his shop rotates depending on what he gets/sells at gun shows, what he special orders on his own and what he special orders for others. He has part time help at his shop when he is at the gun show on the weekends.

Now he has not told me how he accomplishes all this but I can pretty well guess. He would have to have the trailer/pickup/van previously discussed with his "Gun Show Stock" in it. This "stock" would also rotate thru his shop, but NOT every gun every time back home. I am pretty sure he selects what he wants to move at his shop and what he wants to move at the gun show. He even has customers at his shop that ask him to watch for certain models at the gun shows in super condition and buy for them if/when he sees one.

So, bottom line is, he has two inventories. Shop and "Gun Show Stock" and moves items from/to as he deems necessary based on what he feels is the demand for any particular gun. NOT ALL AT ONCE every weekend.
