Beretta CX4 ??? Your thoughts ??

Post by Reysc »

Anybody here owns one ?? Broke as I am , I am suffering from an urge to buy a carbine type rifle   I have an AK and coulpe SKS's but goodness gracious, the AR15 seems to have left a permanent impression on my mind. It got even worst when "The Marshall" showed up in my office to let me fondle his new RRA AR15!! Anyway, the CX4 caught my interest. I like the price of the rifle and the ammo. Easier to field strip and maybe more practical for home/range use???
Here it is..http://www.berettausa.com/product/rifle ... tseries=18

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I've got an AR-15 carbine, and IMHO it's the way to go. Of course you could always get both ;-)

Ohhh surrrrre. Blame it on me. ;-)

Uhh, Rey, RRA makes an AR15 in 9mm if you are concerned about ammo.

Since you brought it up.... here are pics of the beastie with the Meprolight Reflex installed.
Yes I know the "dot" doesn't line up with the sights; it is the positioning of the camera that causes that. Grrrr.

You can see the difference between sight down, and then flipped up in 2nd picture. Oh and Rey, you can punch leeetle holes with it. Hehehheh.

If you want a rifle, get an AR. If you want a wonderfully accurate and ergonomic carbine, go with the CX4.
I got to shoot this thing at a Beretta Range day a while back and I absolutely loved it. I couldn't not hit the center. They had mounted the bipod and RDS on it and that thing was a beauty. If you have any familiarity with Beretta handguns, then this gun will feel like silk to you. You can even get one that allows for magazine interchangeability. If you have a 92/96, or Cougar, or PX4, then you can get one that accepts your mags.
Head over to BerettaForums.net and take a look at their "Long guns" section for all of the CX4 knowledge you seek. ;-)

I have a CX 4 Storm in .40 S&W that takes 96 magazines. Since I own both the 92 and 96, I went with the 40 cal. version to take maximum advantage of the 16" barrel.

It is very accurate and reliable. The rifle comes w/ a builtin recoil pad (although there isn't much of a recoil from the pistol cartridge to begin with), The sights are adjustable for windage and elevation on the front sight; Rear sight has 2 aperatures SR (hsort range) and LR; barrel is chrome lined; uses blow back operation, can be configurd for left handed operatoin w/o tools, adjustable length of pull (w/ addition/deletion of spacers near the recoil pad), comes w/ bottom & side rails. Build quality is what you'd expect from an Italian Beretta. From a plastic rest with irons, I'm able to get 1" groups at 25 yards, and I am terrible with benchrest shooting. I easily get 2" groups at 25 yards standanding, w/o sling and other supports.

Never used it in a defensive situation, but I have used it in 3 different carbine matches. I have found it to be very competitive in the limited (10 round) division. It has good ergo and fast sights (compared to the keltec sub 2000, which is its competitor). For the carbine matches, I keep it on SR since targets are never more than 30 yards away. There is no very-high capacity mags for the 40 cal., so in a real defensive situation I'm not sure if it is an optimal carbine. The carbines comes with a factory custom hard carry case that has room for sling, 5 mags and 200 rounds of ammo. Perfect for a carbine match.

Prices are a bit high since it is a Beretta. IMHO, a keltec, although not as good, deserves a look if you are considering this carbine because it is cheaper, can use Glock mags, reliable, accurate, and made in the USA. If you can stand the looks, you may even look into the Hi point carbine, they are even cheaper than the Keltec, but the ones I saw at a gun show looks way substandard in terms of fit.

I like the Beretta, but don't forget about the M1 carbine. You can buy new ones as well as old military carbines.

The bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2000 fps and a muzzle energy of around 900 ft pounds, compared to 1200/448 for 140 grain .40 in Corbon DPX.

You can get synthetic pistol grip stocks for the M1 carbine too.

Just a thought.

TxI,

Did you ever see the "AR15/AK47/M1 comparison" that is floating around the internet?

Something like this:

'Shooting at a tree at 50yds"
* AR15 will hit dime-sized targets
* AK47 will hit half-dollar sized targets
* M1 will blow the tree in half.

To tell you the truth, I have wanted one in .45acp, but it is limited to 8 round mags.

I think Beretta tried to make things as confusing as possible.

IIRC, in 9mm and .40, you can get either the Cougar platform or the 92/96 platform. The .45acp is only available in the Cougar platform. Last I checked, no one offered any larger mag than the 8 round for the Cougar pistol.

I have both the Kel-tec PLR-16 (.223 pistol) and SU-16C (folding stock carbine that fires in folded position). I think either one of these is better than the CX-4.

I have both but just sold my CX4. The CX4 is a great carbine and extremely accurate. However, you're still limited by the ballistics of the pistol cartridge. It was an excellent plinker and welcome at the pistol range which made it nice. One ragged hole was the norm with the Storm even out at 50yds. A red dot belongs on the top and it's rapid target acquisition and superb handling make it a wonderful shooter. The trigger needs work but the availability of mags is abundant. I converted mine to take PX4 mags to swap with my pistol and you'll never find enough toys to fill all the rails available.

On the other hand, I built my own AR and have found it to be extremely satisfying. Unlike the CX4, I feel the AR platform offers much more availability of accessories and a wide sepection of calibers by replacing the upper. As for shear power, the AR takes the cake. Other than the range and plinking I couldn't really find an application for the CX4. I use a pistol for home defense, so that role was already filled.

Here's a comparison pic:

The best part about AR's is that you can buy the stripped lower and build it yourself with parts you prefer. I built the lower on the AR in the pic. Haven't got the tools to build an upper but that's in the works.

Biggest benifit for the CX4.....cheap ammo and a hoot to shoot. There's a 20 round MecGar mag in testing now for the 96 series CX4.

Cx4 models include:

9mm cougar, 92 and PX4 series mags
40cal cougar and 96 series mags
45acp cougar mags

Still, there's higher capacity AR mags that are cheaper. The AR is available in polymer, carbon fiber and alumnum. It's easy to find replacement parts from a variety of manufacturers. Guess why I got rid of my CX4? (see my sig line for the real reason)
