Stun Gun Ok for College Dorm?
I want to get one for my GF so she can have that and pepper spray for going in and out of the dorms. Anyone know? Thanks.
As far as I know, no law in Texas limits or prohibits stun guns (Tazers, etc.) or pepper spray.
The university may and probably does have a general prohibition on "weapons," which will mean anything the administration wants it to mean.
In situations like that, I sometimes rely on the rule that what they don't know can't hurt me. This is, of course, a decision that everyone must make in view of all the possible consequences.
I also have to point out that training is necessary for the use of any tool, and situational awareness and a fighting mindset are more important than the tool itself.

I would check the housing contract and student handbook for the school's weapons policy. A college can forbid all sorts of items that are perfectly legal to carry and use anywhere else. Candles come to mind: more than a few dorms have burned to the ground, so many schools forbid candles and incense burners in campus housing.
The same, unfortunately, goes for weapons. If nothing else, your GF will be able to make an informed choice once she knows what her school allows and forbids.

where is she?
TAMU has two different policies I noticed, first they defined weapons as what the state lists them as in 42.05(I think thats the right one) stun guns and pepper spray arn't on that list.
As I read on their policy they again referred to weapons and defined with the usual stuff and then also "to cause pain or incapacitate".
They used to expressly say that pepper spray wasn't allowed, but now I can't find that anywhere. I'm thinking about calling the campus PD and asking, but I'm not sure.

I would not really worry about what the university policy was. If you want her to have it, and she is comfortable using it, then get it without a doubt.
I worked a semester at the student judicial program (oversees all dorm violations) at Texas Tech.....which was part of my punishment.....and I never saw any violation get punished that was non-alcohol/drug related. Everything else was just a warning.
I think a university would be OK that one of their students defended herself, instead as ending up as a sexual assault case.
