Veteran Designation for Driver Licenses

I just found out about this and thought this was pretty cool for those that aren't retired and don't want to carry around their DD214 for Veteran verification purposes.

Has anyone had this designation added to their Drivers License yet?

Veteran Designation for Driver Licenses

DPS now offers a veteran designation on the face of driver licenses for qualifying veterans. The designation is not available on ID cards at this time.

Qualifications

For this purpose, a veteran is someone who has served in the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Marine Corps or has served in the Texas National Guard, including the Texas Army and Air National Guard (but does not include the Texas State Guard). To qualify, the veteran must have been honorably discharged.

Proving Veteran and Discharge Status

Veterans must visit a driver license office and present a copy of or an original DD-214, DD-215, NGB-22, or US Department of Veterans Affairs disability letter showing that they received an honorable discharge or a general discharge (under honorable conditions) in order to be eligible for the veteran designation.

Fee

The designation itself is free of charge when applying for an original or renewal driver license, or when making a change to a license. If you are only adding a veteran designation, you must pay the required fee for the duplicate license (some disabled veterans are exempt—see below).

Disabled veterans who meet the above requirements for a fee-exempt driver license will not be charged a duplicate license fee to add the veteran designation on their driver license.

Showed up without my DD-214, and they wouldn't take my US Navy hat as proof.

Why in the world would someone wear a hat that says US Navy, if they didn't serve? It ain't like I was claiming to be a Marine.

Yes, I've been seeing a few licenses like that when I process 4473s at the Old Cannon Armory. The disabled vet requirement is a 60% disability designation. That leaves "slighly cracked, but serviceable" disabled vets like me (30%) having to reach in their wallets. Not that I'm complaining. I've never felt disabled enough that I feel like I'm entitled to free stuff (except that monthly "consolation prize" check Uncle Sam gives me every month)

I'm surprised you have to ask that. Read Stolen Valor. People claim vet status all the time, POW, MOH, everything, when they never served a day. Some even forge DD-214's. One guy I read about recently adopted the entire biography of a Navy Seal, verbatim, and went around bragging about all his exploits.

I had to provide my DD214 when I requested Army plates for my turck. A week later I went to renew my DL--would not allow me to do on-line. I did not request it be added to my DL but I am assuming that since the State now has the DD214, it was added automatically. OldCannon was the first to see it on my DL.

I called the Sherman TXDPS Office today and asked if I got a Duplicate License with "Veteran" designation would I have to bring a DD-214 since my Veteran status is already on file with DPS in the CHL Licensing Division.

Lady said they cannot access the CHL information on Veteran status.......

I said OK, and plan on going down with another copy of my DD-214 next week. But, I'm gonna try another avenue when I get there......

I'm gonna ask them if I have to provide a DD-214 even though it is already on file at DPS Vehicle Registration and I have "Vietnam Veteran" License Plates on one of my vehicles. I'm curious if they can access their own system..

I will have a DD-214 with me, but I'm gonna try to not have to give it up (running low on copies with seals).

Also I am a Disabled Vet and receive a Monthly check, but not 60%, so I will have to pay the $11.00 for the duplicate license.

BTW.......anyone know if TXDPS Driver's License Offices are posted 30.06 or otherwise off limits for CHL? I ask because I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

With a CHL AND a vet designation on ye olde drivers license, they might put us on DOUBLE secret probation.
