New Addition: Mossberg 500

Post by daniel2002p »

Just bought my first shotgun. Found a great deal on a Mossberg 500 at the FtW Cheaper Than Dirt, and while I was there bought a heat shield with some sights. Not sure how accurate these sights are but I like the look it gives this firearm. I have a lot of plans to customize it so if you have pics of yours customized I would love to see them.

First I took the dowel out since in not going to hunting anything other than clay targets with it and put the heat shield on. I also want a pistol grip stock on it just cannot decide which one... Maybe one that has a ammo carrier built in. And now for some pics.

1)Treat firearms as if they are loaded. 2)Point the muzzle away from non-targets.
3)Keep fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot. 4)Be sure of your target and backstop.

Hmmm. Fire a couple first - they're not the most fun things to shoot.

The 500 has been my favorite for SD and hunting for 20+ years. I agree that you will be far better armed the way it is compared to the pistol grip. I like the Phoenix brand adjustable stock but you have to modify it to be able to access the Mag release. That is a fine looking machine you got there.

A pistol grip on a Mossberg 500 makes access to the safety with your hand in firing position impossible since the safety is on top of the tang and your hand would be wrapped around the PG several inches from the safety. Take AndyC's advise and try before you buy. PG stocks aren't the most comfortable thing to shoot. I prefer a standard stock on my gauges.

eta: The way your gun is set up right now is great, the only thing I would add is a light. Use the money you would spend on "Tacticool" accessories on ammo and range time to learn how to use the gun.

Yea I had a chance to shoot one of my buddies pistol grip Maverick 88 and it is not very comfortable... although I like the look better with a pistol grip I think function wins here.

BTW the only way I know of attaching a light would be to add a tactical pump grip, and I kinda like the way this one feels... is there another way?

The easiest and cheapest way to add a light to your gauge is to buy one of the extended magazine clamps that hold the extended magazine to the barrel and put it on the magazine tube with a one inch diameter flashlight clamped in it. The part sells for 10-20 bucks depending on where you buy it. Clamp the flashlight close to the pump grip so you can turn it on and off with a finger of your support hand.

I have a similar one on my Sub-2000 and it works fine.

"Low Recoil" ammo will greatly tame the 500. Best I have found: http://www.sgammo.com/product/federal/1 ... un-ammunit" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Absolutely awsome (tight) patterns with the stuff.

Yeah, my buddy got a gift from his father when he bought his first house. It was a Mossberg 500 mariner with a pistol grip. I told him the same thing! He doesn't have a lot of experience with guns and he only put 6 rounds through it before he bought a stock. They look cool but are no fun.
