Carry in National Forest?

Post by dws1117 »

The thread on Metro carry that evolved into national/state park carry got me wondering about carrying in a national forest. Are national forests considered part of the national park system and hence would be considered a park and therefore for legal to carry?

I am thinking spacifically about the Sam Houston Nat'l Forest. I'll make several trips there per year to fish and shoot when the forest range is open. I don't like the idea of being out there unarmed. Not as concerned about 4 legged or no legged creatured as much as the 2 legged variety.

I have always understood it is legal to carry in national forrests as long as it is legal for you to carry in the state where the national forrest is in; except for Ranger Stations and other buildings because they are federal property.

I'm sure much wiser people here will correct my interpretation.

I know of nothing that makes National Forests (as opposed to National Parks) off limits to firearms, or CHL's. I've hunted and informally shot in the Sam Houston National Forest for 30 years, but not in the last 15.

Around the Angelena & Davy Crocket Natl Forrest we carry all the time. In camp see open & game wardens occasionally & never heard a word.

Great! Thanks for the information. Good to know. I also like to drive out there (near where the range is located) park the car and just go wander around in the woods. It can be very relaxing when I can't really get away from everything. Of course I don't go wander around out there during hunting season.
