A former U.S. Marine is in prison not far from here in Matamoros. His crime attempting to register an old shotgun when he crossed the border with his marine friends.
This is how gun control works. Honest people are in jail while criminals run the country.
I guess this what Bob Costas is looking for.

There is no such thing as a former U.S. Marine........
Once a Marine, ALWAYS a Marine.......

If they had a clue, they could have referred to him as a Veteran U.S. Marine.

I even emailed the show "Fox & Friends" when it aired and informed them of their error. Think I got a reply?

I don't mind "former Marine" just don't call me a "Ex Marine"

Yes the Marines are a Department of the Navy.....The Mens Department....
CHL since 7/11/11
CHL since 7/11/11

Sorry, I forgot my training watching NCIS. Always a Marine.

It's amazing to me that a 24 inch barrel shotgun is restricted for military use only. I guess all of those restrictions are really stopping the cartels from murdering people? Mexico better release him or we'll send more M4 carbines to the cartels via the ATF!

Re: Marine chained to bed in Mexico
It's amazing to me that an adult who is even partly oblivious to events on the Mexico border over the last 10 years would even consider taking a firearm or ammunition across the boarder and thinking he would get a pass on the mexico side.
Yes I get it, the claim is, the US customs folks said it would be ok... But since when has anything the US customs or Border police said held any authority or swaying power over what the Mexican government, police, military chooses to do, laws to enforce on THERE side.
Like the trucker that drove a load of ammo in to Mex and then acted surprised when he was arrested.
Like the soldier that drove in to Mex with weapons in his car and then acted surprised when he got arrested.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
I do home this Marine gets released unharmed and he is allowed to get on with his life
But I do basically say,, he is responsible for HIS actions, in knowingly taking a weapon into a foreign country that clearly states, weapons are not allowed.

Marine father recounts harrowing phone call demanding money or his son would be killed in prison.
And yes he is responsible for his actions, going to Mexico for any reason (armed unarmed even Cancun) to me is a very foolish thing to do.
Of course if I was President, he would not have spent more than a day in jail after I found out about it.
But I am not President, so all I can do is share the information.

One of the big name instructors says something like don't go stupid places, don't do stupid things, and don't hang with stupid people.E.Marquez wrote:It's amazing to me that an adult who is even partly oblivious to events on the Mexico border over the last 10 years would even consider taking a firearm or ammunition across the boarder and thinking he would get a pass on the mexico side.

I believe the basic political division in this country is not between liberals and conservatives but between those who believe that they should have a say in the personal lives of strangers and those who do not.

My recollection is that the truck driver went down the wrong road and couldn't turn around.E.Marquez wrote:Like the trucker that drove a load of ammo in to Mex and then acted surprised when he was arrested.
I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, nor should anything I say be taken as legal advice. If it is important that any information be accurate, do not use me as the only source.
Re: Marine chained to bed in Mexico
That is how it started.... and when he realized that and WENT ANYWAYDave2 wrote:My recollection is that the truck driver went down the wrong road and couldn't turn around.E.Marquez wrote:Like the trucker that drove a load of ammo in to Mex and then acted surprised when he was arrested.

And he had a choice... STOP THE TRUCK middle of the road, blocking traffic.. get out and walk away.. walk back to the US border station and say...Sorry, but I am NOT driving in to MEX with that load. Help me back it up, or you drive it into MEX.. Yes likely gets fired, yes gets yelled at by the same US border folks that just let him though the US side, maybe even arrested IN THE US.... BUT gets to GO HOME.
Or continue into MEX,, KNOWING he has a truck load of stuff that even a single bullet of will send him to prison....
That was a choice.... and like any other even marginally aware adult today.. choosing to go into MEX with firearms or ammunition is not a smart choice.
I'd prefer the US Gov fix the issue and not just let the state department and US/MEX lawyers and family's deal with the problems. ... but it is what it is right now.
When i'm in El Paso.. I stay VERY alert as to where Im at on the roads,, knowing there are many ways to take a wrong off ramp, NOT take a off ramp, get off the wrong side of 10 and be at or across the border.
I'd leave my Shelby, Mustang, Truck, bikes, and every thing I own in the middle of the road before I would cross the boarder..
I think it is terrible that the situation exists when we have to be so hyper vigilant about... but we do.

That is because Mexico has a border crossing. We are the ones that don't. It is amazing how the open border discussion only works one way.E.Marquez wrote: When i'm in El Paso.. Have you been to the border in El Paso? What about the dozens of US Border patrol agents, Customs agents there do not qualify as US presence at a border crossing point?chasfm11 wrote:That is because Mexico has a border crossing. If you read and research the Media reports on high profile US citizen events crossing the border with arms and ammunition.. 2 of the last 3 have reports the person SPOKE with US customs or Border folks before they crossed and were told to continue…
DO I believe all that I read in a media report? Of course not..
But anyone that has been at a US crossing point in to Mexico on a major entry point.. clearly will meet, see, many US agents on the crossing.

Re: Marine chained to bed in Mexico
I've been to Mexico dozens of times and many times stayed for a week or more. Mostly going to Scuba dive, but for business too.
I love it, most especially the Caribbean side. It's a beautiful place peopled with friendly, gracious folks.
Sadly, I'll probably, never go again as it's now much to dangerous. (unless things change dramatically for the better, which I sincerely doubt will happen in my lifetime)
The few remaining places i.e., Cancun, etc., once considered "Tourist Golden Eggs", criminals dared not molest by virtue of heavy police protection, are no longer protected...tourists are now fair game.
Adios Mexico.

What I believe is that US border is very much like the TSA. TSA is security theater. It does horrible things to innocent people under the pretense of security while allowing gaping holes in the overall security environment.
I know that there are thousands of dedicated border agents who do the best that they can under often terrible conditions. My hat is off to them for the vigor with which they do their jobs. I agree that at major check points, there is a Border Patrol presence. That presence even extends to smaller ones like Nuevo Progresso where I have most recently crossed the border.
But at the end of the day, it is border security theater. It is a show for the sake of saying that we have one.
If every Mexican citizen who did the same thing as this poor marine were treated the same way in our country especially at the major border checkpoints, the problem would have stopped long ago. The Mexican authorities are sending a message. We don't. How many US citizens fully understand what Mexico will tolerate when entering their country? Go read the RV blogs of those who travel to Mexico and see their level of understanding. Now, I wonder what the understanding is like among the people from Mexico who travel to the US about what the US tolerates. I strongly believe it is very different.
By the way, I've also been through the check point near the King Ranch inside the US Border. To me that is another fine example of border theater. I've been through the El Paso checkpoint to Juarez but it was decades ago. There is no way that I would go to Juarez today.
