So yesterday I bought some ammo from walmart and asked while I was grabbing everything I needed if they had anymore in the back. The lady replied no and I payed for the ammo and left. As I was walking out I remembered I needed a few more things so I went back in. After I gathered everything else I headed to the checkout. I passed by the ammo section once again and noticed the same lady with another box of misc. ammo restocking the shelves. So I stopped and asked again was there anything else in the back. She told me that she wasn't aloud to tell anyone if there was anymore then what was out on the shelves.
I dont know the policy of walmart but it seems to me they may be trying to limit the amount of ammo one buys at a time. She also stated there have been many call of people trying to put ammo on hold to come pickup at a later date/time(she said this was against policy).
My Wally (SATX) is limiting UMC 250rd to two boxes each caliber. Their normal UMC 250rd ammo allotment from home office is 8-10 boxes .40 and 12-16 boxes 9mm. I bought 2 ea. last week - wanted 4 ea. - back next day - all gone.
If they are going to "hold out" or whatever you want to call it, they should be up front about it and go ahead and put out customer limit signs.
However, I do know that some folks want to go around, buy it all up from the more generic locations in a given area, and resell it at a larger profit. Certainly not illegal by any means, but kind of shady. It hurts the firearms community because a lot of folks don't know all the resources that the more informed gun people like members of this forum know about. If they can't buy any ammo at Wal-mart or Academy for a weekend at the range with the wife, kid, brother, whatever, they might sell their firearm and go spend that money on a nice, shiny dirt bike, or concert tickets, or a thousand other things. They aren't going to hunt around the 'Net for hours scavenging for bulk buys at the best price since they couldn't find any at Wal-Mart or the Academy...we need NUMBERS on our side now more than ever...and doing things that drive folks away from wanting to own firearms is counter-productive. I don't want ANY new government regulations or laws on firearms, there are far too many regulations and laws already.
So, I don't really have a problem with certain places like Wal-Mart "rationing" the ammo as long as its their own policy and not some law forcing them to do so. Like I said, they should just be up-front about it.
I saw this thread so I asked a family member who is a Walmart store manager. She said corporate has not notified her store or any of the others in her region of a policy that prevents a Walmart employee from disclosing whether additional ammo stock is available in the stock room. She said this maybe an in-store policy that the individual store manager is enforcing.
I'm not upset with rationing the number boxes sold to each patron per each visit only because I've seen local retailers buy all the stock then marked it up 300% at their location. I don't know what the magic number is, I'm just saying there should be some kind of limit to prevent this type of practice.

Walmart is profit driven. I suspect that their profit margin is greater on a packet of ChiCom made underwear than on American made guns and ammo. I had an Associate in the Pelham, AL store reply to my query on some .22LR ammo with, "...yes, the computer says we have 33 boxes in back, how many do you want...". This man was/is an exceptional Associate.
Anybody here old enough to remember the placards that were posted on every check-out lane in Walmart a looong time ago? The placards said, 'When there are more than three pople in line, we'll open another register', and had Sam Walton's signature on the placard.
Yep, that was then and this is now..... FWIW, I do not have any problem with a purchase limit/person.

I dont have a problem with a reasonable "limit", lets say 4 or 5 boxs but I'd like them to be upfront about it. I imagine there a quite a few people that are going around buying up everything to resell it, I for one am not.
They know when someone walks into Walmart it is highly probably you will end up buying something you didn't entend to buy. So keeping the ammo game in guess mode forces us to walk into Walmart more often, which increases sales of other items... We went to two wal arts yesterday and one time no ammo, but ended up buying 21.00 of junk. Second Walmart one 50rd box of 223 left that I got plus 85.00 in air soft junk for the kids..
Walmart scored an extra 100.00+ on jan 1st just due to low ammo supply..
I think they are holding out on ammo in some locations.
One of the ones I went to said something about them not ordering any right now because the supplier might raise their prices soon (sounds stupid right? Order now BEFORE price goes up). This is the same tool who said me to exasperated (after I asked nonchalantly "oh, when do you guys get your next shipment") "We'll get it when we get it ok??!!". But Wal Mart does its own supplying from centralized distribution points owned and operated by Wal Mart. So if some Wal Marts have ammo, and some don't that only means the store manager is solely responsible for the supply of ammo at the location.
Artificial shortage at Wal Mart IMO.

You are right! Walmart itself encourages RV'rs to 'overnight' in their parking lots. We have done it on a couple occassions and it costs a lot more than a night at a KOA.
There is no .223/5.56 or .308 ammo around here but I have found 7.62x39, .40, 9mm, .45, and most other popular calibers. More people own more guns so ammo is going to be in short supply. The stores are putting it on the shelf and it is being bought. Even the expensive hunting ammo is gone. It isn't the stores holding back anything but that some people are buying ammo every time they come across any.
It is my opinion since we aren't spending money on that extra ammo we should donate it to the NRA, SAF or better yet pay for memberships for friends and family that don't have the money or simply won't do what it takes to protect these rights. The bills coming out of D.C. demand bans and registration of semi-auto guns just like they were machine guns. It is more in our interest to stop the nuts in D.C. and Austin from enacting new gun laws than it is to store a couple more boxes of ammo that will be available in good supply if people know no new laws are going to restrict their rights. That's my opinion.

Went to Academy to get 22LR. They were out. Thought about Walmart and realized I'd rather pay horrendous shipping than play roulette in Walmart. Even if they have it, having to hunt someone down to open the case is too hideously annoying for me to go there just for that.
