Mom & Pop Shops (FFL question)

Post by Wodathunkit »

I went to my local Maw & Paw gun store here in Alvin today to see about getting some night sights ordered for my Glock. I bought that firearm from him. His display cases and gun racks are just about empty (less some revolvers, pocket guns, and a couple of deer rifles).

I'm worried for him, what if it takes him 2-3 months to get his inventory back up. FFL question, do these independent guys have to wait in line behind all the big box stores to get resupplied or is it first come first served? Good folks, hate to see them have a record breaking December and be out of business by February. :patriot:

at the same point, if they sold their stock of weapons, and probably the stock of guns that normally would have lasted them through February, then they needed to bank it, and ride the tide.

one of my favorite ffl buddies couldn't make it through the original obomanation... as a small shop/low volume dealer he couldn't get enough firearms from Springfield, Kimber, Beretta, or even the low end to keep the display cases stocked. It finally wore down to a hobby type situation for his last year, and this past June he didn't renew his license and officially closed the gun shop. I spent many an enjoyable evening hanging out in the shop, often until 10-11:00 p.m., tinkering with guns, talking guns, smoking nice hand rolled cigars, and just pleasant visits with other "like minded" visitors. His demise was all due to the previous panic. Now my current "go to" guy is dealing with the very same problems. I have always been one to gladly spend another 10-20% on purchases with these type folks, if for no other reason the solid friendships mean a lot. But, that's also a trait in small towns anyway.

We buy from 7 different distributors who for the most part are the distribution channels for mots manufacturers. Many of the big box stores purchase directly from the manuafcturers since they are spending big bucks, imagine how much Bass Pro, Cabellas and such spend to stock their stores so they would be a priority versus the small shops. We need to re-supply as we only have 3 guns left in inventory due to the buying rush, a LC9 with CT laser, a Kahr CM9 and a Ruger 22-45. The distributors have nothing except for hunting rifles and shotguns and low end handguns, even all the 5 shot revolvers are gone. The bottom line is that it will be months before we can get any inventory again, fortunatly our transfers have really picked up, people are spending crazy money on common firearms, if we had a store front we would be in big trouble trying to pay the rent......

On the plus side, manufacturers are all busting a gut building new gun stock for us to buy.

So, new jobs (can't do without extra employees when a rush is in the making) are being created.

Yeah!

It depends upon how good of a relationship (i.e. how much he spent) with his dealers. This will force some smaller dealers out of business. The distributors provide hard to find stuff (which is anything right now) to those who are their best customers(who bought the most from them). Right now I cannot find anything of value to buy, but I am home based and and not making a living off this. Depending upon how much reserve they have it is hard to tell if they will be able to hold out long enough to get inventory.
I foresee another wave of frenzied buying when the gun laws start to be announced. It could be hard to stay running when there are few firearms to be had.

When the panic subsides (and it will) I'll remember who really tried to gouge us.

Not being an obvious sucker (not that I always avoid such, but it's easy now...) I'll be buying from those who simply ran out of stock. Know that some us will remember, if they as gun sellers tried to take unfair advantage...

Man oh man, will I remember!

Kudos to people who feel the way that you do, in reality what it will come down to is that people will once again shop price and buy from whoever is the cheapest and will pass by the small local dealers to save $20.00 while forgetting about the price gouging that took place.

Yep my local gun store looked bleak today. He told me he can't get anything in to sell. He could have sold me a silencer but I don't want to wait 8 plus months to get all my cavities searched by the Feds. Can't believe I can get a firearm in less than 15 mins with a CHL but if I want a comp, I wait like Rip Van Winkle before I get it. For a two hundred dollar tax stamp, it would seem the system would be a little faster.

A lot of thing depend on defining a mom and pop shop. The guy I use works out of his home, but in one night placed 400 orders. He is still having trouble getting guns (mostly AR), but is getting his hands on pistols. He said his AR parts business has really picked up, as one might imagine! He is lucky he doesn't have a storefront to support I guess is the main thing. I too hope the small guys make it, I sure like dealing with some of the ones I have purchased from in the past....they actually take the time to talk, show you what guns they have etc. The big shops just want your paperwork and credit card!
I don't carry my 40 all the time, just when I leave my home!

I feel for those that need ranges as income. No one can find ammunition, and when people can, they certainly aren't going to shoot it right now.
