New M&P 40 owner

I had orginally planned on getting either a Glock or M&P compact or full-sized .40 S&W later this year, but recent developments convinced me to do it sooner.

I had read some good reviews on the M&P's, and that's all the store happened to have in stock.

The minute I picked it up, I understood what everyone meant by the superior grip and ergonomics, and I was sold.

Now my Gen 3 Glock 26 feels like a "Block" in comparison.

Will follow up with range reports, hopefully by tomorrow evening.

So far S&W is the only brand I own more than one of, and it is my goal to have a diverse collection not heavily vested in any one manufacturer.

I'm wondering if the Shield .40 (and other subcompact .40's) are really worth it, with a lot of the energy going into blast and flash?

I see .40 as being like .357 Magnum in that it needs at least a 4" barrel for maximum benefit.

Shot around 230 rounds (UMC and 5 Golden Sabers) @ 10 yards with zero malfunctions:

This was my first time at the range in about 8 months:



Smooth shooting and manageable recoil that was not at all "snappy". I would say it was similar to a 1911 .45 ACP. The sights definitely jumped around.

The Glock is in many ways a very good pistol, but there is no doubting that the ergonomics on the M&P, XD, and XDm pistols are superior. I guess the Gen 4 Glocks attempt to remedy this this with the adjustable backstraps, but even so the grip angle and lack of sufficient beavertail eludes me.
