1911 Grips and Holster

Post by punkndisorderly »

Think I'm finally going to go back to a 1911 for carry.

My Springfield is currently wearing the stock wood grips. Would like something a little "grippier". I've been eying the aluminum grips and g-10 grips. Anyone want to share their experience with these?

Also looking for a new IWB holster for a full size 1911. Any recommendations? I've been looking at the MTAC and Supertuck.

Personally I enjoy vz grips made from g10 specifically the recon and simonich gunner grips. If you don't want grips that are that aggressive I would recommend checking out the alien grips again by vz. As for holsters I usually use a Milt sparks versa-max2 or a raven concealment holster.

Check out Larry Davidson and his Monkey Grip line. His grips fit much better than the VZ line, in other words they cover more of the grip panel area. And another plus to his grips....they're made in Texas. He used to make grips for Wilson Combat and Springfield. He now makes grips for Chuck Rogers and many other top name makers.

You will need to email him with what you want, you can call too. I am in no way associated with Larry, but I have several sets from him and he is a real nice man.

I have this set on my Colt CCO

I have smooth grips on one of my 1911 pistols and a set of Hogue rubber grips without the finger grooves on another. Both guns have either skateboard/tread tape or coarse grit wet or dry sandpaper on the front strap. The gun with the smooth grips has a sharply checkered MSH and the other one has a now discontinued rubber coated Pachmayer MSH. Neither gun slips in the hand even when your hands are wet. Supertuck or any other hybrid IWB works for me.

I love my alumagrips... even the "standard" traction is much better than my previous wood grips with sharp checkering. The other benefit is that the alumagrips don't snag my shirts so I get better grip and less shirt wear. I only wish I have dropped the cash on them years ago. I have not tried the various micarta and similar but have heard very good things about them. I don't like rubber grips as they catch and hang your shirt/cover garment.

As for holsters, there are tons of good ones out there. VMII is very popular- I have a Nexus on the way, it's similar but has added cant and is slimmer (not reinforced at the mouth) You might go to the holster thread and spend 30 minutes clicking each manufacturer and seeing what trips your fancy. You'll probably end up trying a couple before finding your perfect holster. Most of us have.
