I cant access the ar15.com forum (work computer) but there is a sticky that shows all the lube points. If i remember correctly, it is in the ar15 section under "maintenance and cleaning".

The simplest answer is, if it moves oil it. Way more AR15 malfunctions come from too little lube than too much. Use a good high quality lubricant but, any oil is better than none.

I don't shoot as much anymore but I had an AR that went a couple thousand rounds between shooting and all I did was lube the BCG. And had no problems. But I'm lazy. I don't want guns that need to be cleaned after every range trip or match

While I don't clean or oil "Charlene" before shooting, immediately after even 1 round I completely disassemble the BCG and wipe down/clean everything with one of those Rem Oil wipes. Scrape any residue you see (the firing pin on mine gets bad quick). Also I use a q-tip soaked in Rem Oil to clean the gas key and gas tube where they contact each other. A few drops around the moving parts of the trigger group is nice as well.

As stated in the video above I only lubricate the "rails" on the bolt and occasionally run a cloth through the bore and hit it with a chamber brush ( about every 1000-2000rounds). I do blast out the gas tube with brake cleaner and compressed air and then in a very small pipe cleaner inside to remove any remaining particles but that's only been done twice(after about every 5000 rounds) I do prefer a lightweight grease over oil.

So you grease the carrier rails, but no lube on the bolt itself?packa45 wrote:As stated in the video above I only lubricate the "rails" on the bolt and occasionally run a cloth through the bore and hit it with a chamber brush ( about every 1000-2000rounds). Yes I do lube the bolt lightly. Sorry to leave that out.

James Yeager at Tactical Response has good, short video on youtube titled AR 15 lubrication, I hesitate to post due to forum rules; ie Mr. Yeager apparently is, as am I, a member in good standing of the Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles.
