My letter to the White House

My letter to the White House
Mr President:
I am a registered Democrat. While I never simply vote a party line, I do tend to find myself more in line with the Democratic stands than the Republican ones. But this last election, was one in which I found it more difficult to cast a vote for you and those in your party. This is due primarily to my 2nd Amendment concerns. At the end of the day, I had more concerns over those in the other party who I felt would try to make their personal religious beliefs the law of the land. I encourage all Americans to practice the religion and philosophy that their study, thought, and moral compass direct them to. But I must insist that they do not demand I follow their belief system.
My understanding of the positions taken by you compared to those taken by your opponents lead me to believe that you were more moderate, more in tune with those of us in the moderate middle. Despite dire predictions by those on the far right, I did not think you would vigorously pursue the evisceration of the 2nd Amendment with legislation such as the ill conceived, and disingenuously named Assault Weapons Ban. I understand that there are people who decide not to avail themselves of the protections offered by the 2nd Amendment. I support their decisions as to their personal actions. But I must insist that they do not demand I follow their belief system.
I think an unbiased evaluation of the results of the last election show that it was close, and probably won in the middle. Those of us in the middle don't want our rights eroded by gun control any more than we want them encumbered by religion based legislation. It seems to me that Republicans lost the last election by alienating those of us who proudly bore the title Reagan Democrats. Democrats would would do well to learn from the results of the last election. It was not a mandate for far left ideology.
I would encourage you to reach out to those of us, left of center, who very probably put you in office. There are many of us, just left of center, who will stand with the other party on this issue. I don't see that prescient as a good thing for the Democratic party.
Sincerely,
Your constituent,
Guy Wheatley

Re: My letter to the White House
Piffle! Show me exactly where religious people "demanded" you adopt their beliefs. PUHLEEZE! What religion based legislation? That's just hippie-talk. My faith informs my world view, but I don't want a theocracy anymore than you or anyone else does. I LIKE the 1st Amendment—particularly BOTH the establishment and free exercise clauses of it—AS MUCH as I like the 2nd Amendment, both the militia clause and the right of the people clause. According to that observance of the 1st Amendment, I'm not going to demand that women should be thrown in jail for having an abortion. That would be exactly as stupid as requiring religious people to pay for abortions with their taxes, in violation of their first amendment rights Fair is fair. As a religious person, I ask nothing for myself that I'm not willing to concede the exact same amount of freedom to you.BigGuy wrote:Mr President:

Frankly, it's just stupid when people try to blame anything they don't like on religious people.......since they can't support it with the facts. You should make sure you put ALL of that in your letter to the president too, if you're going to make even a pretense of being "moderate."

I ended up writing a similar letter to folks. It'll probably never get read, but I felt better.
There are more of us pro-2A liberals than you'd think. There are a LOT of us, especially among younger folks.

What?? You mean this?Topbuilder wrote:TAM, he answered all those questions in the first sentance.
This is Marxist propaganda swallowed by far too man naive people. No one has proposed laws making their religious beliefs the law of the land. NO ONE. That was a lie that Obama and the Democrats told that obviously rung true to so-called "left of center" folks.I had more concerns over those in the other party who I felt would try to make their personal religious beliefs the law of the land.
If we are EVER going to find common ground in this country, it must begin with dropping the insults and snide remarks toward those of us who have strong religious beliefs. The idea that the Catholic Church (to cite one example) MUST provide contraceptive and abortifacient services to their employees is a gross violation of the First Amendment. Those on the so-called "left of center" could begin by acknowledging that the Catholic Church is trying to be true to its doctrines and dogma, no matter how abhorrent they may find those beliefs, and that this is, at a minimum, an issue that needs to be dealt with carefully and with sensitivity to those beliefs. (And no, I'm not a Catholic.)
Perhaps a counter example would suffice. If the Obama administration insisted that no one in America offer abortions, and passed a law to that effect, implemented rules to enforce it and then gratuitously "conceded" that one didn't have to personally follow that philosophy although one MUST implement the policy for their company, we would hear howling the likes of which would drown out dialog. When the same sort of coercive tyrannical regulations are shoved down the Catholic Church's throat, so-called "left of center" folks never let out a peep.
Now they want to timidly ask the President to please, please not trample on their 2nd Amendment rights? Some of us have been pointing out the violations of the Constitution for decades, and all we've gotten is patronizing platitudes about "democracy" and "rights" so numerous that they boggle the mind.
Why don't we begin by acknowledging that the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, the aptly labeled Bill of Rights, should be sacrosanct and not open to discussion?
The real question is are you (the reader) willing to stand up for those rights and pledge your "life, fortune and sacred honor" to defend those rights? Or are they anachronisms from a bygone era no longer relevant to our "modern" world? Is "Live Free or Die" just a slogan on New Hampshire license plates?

Since this is not a forum about religion, I'll again say
to the OP for being a left-of-center voice FOR GUN RIGHTS and leave it at that.

Re: My letter to the White House
I unfortunately know too many of my peers and those just a few younger that claim to be pro-2A until the Democrats start the gun grabber saber rattling. Then they're all too happy to start "asking the tough questions".nitrogen wrote:I ended up writing a similar letter to folks. It'll probably never get read, but I felt better.

BigGuy I like the fact you wrote such a letter but I fear it'll go unheard. The President and many on the left seem to believe that the last election was a total endorsement for the entire left wing agenda. With no concern for re-election, I'm certain Obama is going for the throat on gun control and another jewel in the crown of his legacy.

Re: My letter to the White House
Yeah, thats precisely why I am here, too, because I agree with most of y'all on gun rights and probably nothing else :)
Let's concentrate on that, shall we?
I know that if the democrats keep this crap up, i'll have a hard time voting for one ever again. I really thought they had learned from Clinton. Perhaps not.

BigGuy,
Thank you for sharing your letters with us... I have a few Democrat -gun owner- friends who now feel the same way, and fear this is headed in a direction they never anticipated... and is not a good destination. Rough years ahead for us.

I would also say to Democrats did not anticipate this, please think about how you view politics and politicians. If you were clearly wrong about this (and you obviously were), what else have you been mistaken about? Please think about our country in terms of your rights and your freedoms and make your political decisions accordingly.
Many Democrats express sincere concerns for the poor and the underprivileged but seem not to realize that if the country goes broke, which it will if we do not dramatically change course soon, the poor and underprivileged will suffer the most of anyone. If you truly care about the poor and the underprivileged, you will fight as hard for their rights and freedoms as you do for your own.
