Great Afternoon

Post by frreed »

I got away from the office today and went to the range with my son. He is home from college and we had not had the chance to shoot together since last January. We went to Shoot Smart in Ft. Worth and had a grand time. We sent 300 rounds downrange (100 9mm and 200 .22) and obliterated the center mass of two silhouettes.

He is going to school in Boston so he loves to shoot when he can. His friends are incredulous, a little terrified and perhaps a bit in awe that he actually shoots "guns". He just grins and tells them that is how we roll in Texas. He turns 21 next November so he is getting his CHL fees and class for Christmas. He's been shooting since he was about 9 years old and shoots way better than I do. (Well a little better  )

I am proud to have an adult son who loves to shoot, respects the responsibility of possessing and using firearms, understands the 2nd Amendment and is not ashamed of it. It was also fun to watch him do this bizarre dance when a hot casing went down the back of his shirt. He kept the pointy end downrange.

Sounds like a great experience. My little one helped me load mags today. I can't wait to take her out shooting when the time is right.

I have been around guns all my life, even as a Californian, and it just baffles me how people are so awestruck by, ignorant and afraid of guns.

Yeah, I just don't get it. My guess is that if you got them past their initial squeamishness and had them put lead on target they would at the very least have a good time. I do think it is a bit different for those of us who live away from the big cities of the east and west coasts. Between the gun laws and the lack of places to shoot, there is so little healthy exposure. For so many the only reality of firearms is from the punk/gangster/mugger... who stands against everything we know and believe about guns. I have the chance to drive a couple hours to go hunt or shoot up some coke cans. An awful lot of people don't. Heck, even here in Carrollton, TX you cannot, legally, shoot an air rifle in your back yard.

Sounds like a great experience. My son is 5 1/2 and can't wait to move on from his BB Gun, but teaching safety with that first. I told my wife I was getting him a 22 bolt action for his 6th birthday, but the jury is still out (from her) on that. I just look forward to teaching him the things I have learned about the proud ownership and safety of firearms. Let's face it....it is fun to shoot and even more fun to hunt!

I started my son with a BB gun. He would go out dove hunting with me and shoot coke cans and other targets. I picked up a Rossi .22/410 combo. I spent all of $129 on it and it was the best investment i can imagine. He loved the .22 and it was actually pretty accurate. The .410 didn't get a lot of use. It kicked like a mule the first season he used it and by the next year he was using my 20 gauge. He learned to be safe and to love shooting.

I am looking forward to him getting his CHL. He really likes my sub compact XD. I may give it to him for a carry pistol. That way I can pick up a new XDs. He did catch on that my generosity wasn't all that generous. Even better, as long as he is in school, in Massachusetts, I can still carry the XD. I am such a great dad! :rolll

My wife and I took our soon to be 18 year old son to the range last Sunday. I put 50 rounds of .40 through my XD and my son helped my wife with 50 .380 rounds through her LCP before we wandered over to the rifle range for some good old .22lr fun. We had a blast. Nothing better than a day at the range with your family. Just wish my daughter and her husband could have joined us, but he's a USN Sonarman stationed out west. They can't wait to join us on their next leave. Should be fun.
