The article was so ridiculous that in parts is was laugh-out-loud funny. But the bottom line of absurdity is the bullet serial number stupidity. There is no way to link the serial number to a shooter that could stand up in court --and that's assuming someone acquiring ammo for an illegal purpose is going to buy them under his own name.

There is absolutely no way for them to ensure that the serial number won't be obliterated from the bullet...especially when the bullet strikes the target. Just like that stupid microstamping thing where the firing pin is supposed to stamp a number on the primer when the gun is fired...like the bad guys couldn't simply hit the end of the firing pin with some sandpaper...once again, all of those "ideas" have one thing in common: they only penalize those who aren't criminals and don't have criminal intentions...which is the VAST majority of firearms owners.

This shows a total disregard for potential abuse. The police chief is remarked to begin his day looking at lists of sales and targeting homes that he otherwise would have no reason to visit. True, but even if it worked.....what I had in mind is the fact that a criminal trial requires proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor: You purchased the ammo that killed Mr. Santos. Defendant: Yes sir, but I sold it to another dude who saw me coming out of the store, and made $10. Or any of a number of other stories a defense attorney can come up with. Finding a serial number on the bullet wouldn't "prove" anything. And the easiest way to make it absolutely worthless would be for bad guys to just trade ammo to sever the link (and again, that's assuming they'd be stupid enough to buy it in their own name to begin with).

You can't buy cold medicine without ID and in limited quantities...does that mean there's no more meth on the street? They pay buyers to get what they need or steal it wholesale. Furthermore, they aren't going to be shooting a bunch of rounds in practice, so it's price inelastic as far as they're concerned. They could pay $50 for 20 rounds on the black market and not care, but those of us buying ammo for practice, by and large, can't afford prices like that.

That idiotic proposal has already passed in California, to stamp the gun's serial number on cases.

It was pointed out that you could (a) use revolvers and keep the cases so there is no evidence (b) pick up your brass after every shooting, or (c) hang out at a local range and pick up brass from several different lanes in the same caliber, and sprinkle them all around a crime scene.

It didn't matter to the dim bulbs in the Legislature. They are used to "doing something" and even if it is idiotic, ineffective, counterproductive, and even insane, they can still use it in the campaign literature to claim they are "doing something."

The real point is to make ammunition so expensive that nobody will shoot, unavailable, cumbersome to buy, risky to own. I believe Arnold singed a bill that requires us to report a gun theft within 48 hours, or WE go to jail!

No one need wonder why I yearn to come home.

We had to show our firearm-license in South Africa to purchase ammo of the caliber on the license - as well as primers and powder. Pain in the behind for the dealers (whose doors could be - and were - closed if a police inspection showed a mismatch in count by a SINGLE cartridge) - and did ZERO to prevent, much less solve, crimes committed with firearms.
