This happened in a dream...

Post by Littoria »

What day its been today. Its been one of those days that you know you shouldn't let things get to you... but you do anyway.

So to calm my nerves Ive decided to tell you all a little story and pose some questions at the end.

The timeline of this story is from mid december to mid january.
Before I begin, have you seen spiderman 2? The scene where spiderman loses his powers and goes to the doctor? He says something along the lines of
"In a dream im spiderman, and im losing my powers... actually it was a friends dream..."
keeping that in mind...

My friend...Bart... had a dream:
Bart is the type of person that has a system, he knows the location of every item that is his property. He prides himself with precision and attention to detail.
As they say in the Air Force, Excellence in all we do.

It was a December morning when all packed up, he and his gf went to Hobby airport (HOU) to catch their flight. They each had one checkin and one carryon (backpacks).
W...err.. THEY had arrived really early at the airport so security was a breeze. The flight was to La Guardia (LGA), where they then took a shuttle to Newark(EWR) for their next flight (for those wondering, it was significantly cheaper this way... for them that is).
So once they arrived at EWR, they checked in, went through security AGAIN and finally made it to the gate. Same as before one checkin luggage each and one carry on.

They flew from EWR to Fumicino (FCO) the main airport near Rome, Italy. Once there Barts family came to pick them up and took them home.

Fast forward to newyears eve, the opportunity to go to London for one day presents itself to Bart and his Gf.
Barts father works for an airline company and would be the pilot on their flight to London.
They both pack up their backpacks with the essentials for one day and on new years afternoon they go to FCO, go through security and land in Heathrow Airport(LHR).

They spend Jan 2nd in London trying to cram as much into one day as they can.

The next day they went to LHR, Barts father went with the crew through the crews security while Bart and his gf went through the regular checkin and stood in line for security as all us regular people do. Security was long and they were getting worried they might miss their flight.
"Will your dad take off without us?" Barts gf asked
So its finally their turn to go through and like theyve done 3 time before that time, backpack went in the xray and they went through the metal detector.
Only this time Barts backpack wasnt returned to him. He thought "great a RANDOM search, for the people whos flight leaves in 15 min"
Since his was not the only bag that was pulled, he had to wait for security to go through the bags before his.

Bart tells his gf to go ahead and get on the plane, that way she can explain to his father what the wait is.
Once they get to his backpack, the security lady goes through his backpack and says Barts good to go...
However the xray lady said NO!!! Thats the one we called our supervisor for... WTH??!
Barts backpack goes through the xray again and searched one more time...
"its in here somewhere..." the security lady says.
Bart curious asks what they were looking for, and chuckled when he was told. "There is no way" he thought.

Until finally the lady looks through the pen holder section, she proceeds to pull out a .223 very LIVE round.
Barts jaw drops in disbelief.... or so he says...
His face was red, he eyes were wide open...

A memory flashed in his mind when he took his friend shooting back in august. Bart let his friend use the backpack he decided to bring on this trip because his friend did not have a gun bag.

As the security lady hands over the round to her superior, Barts only thoughts are on whats written in his passport. "If you are arrested, demand to see the U.S. Consul."
The supervisors and the security lady talk and Bart over hears the frase "I think its a dummy", then the supervisor turns to Bart and says "Sir you cannot bring this on board"

Bart simply says "Please dispose of it for me."
The Security supervisor nods and walks off.

Bart then gets the ok to go to his flight... on the furthest gate in the airport of course...

As he runs and makes it just in time, he sits down next to his gf and says "you were right! From now on, guns and ammo go in gun bags, and they will go NOWHERE else"

So thats Barts Never again story.
I hope you can all learn from it... I know I did...

But heres a question... three security check points and only one caught the round. Makes you wonder what else gets through, doesnt it?

I do not want to be a test case.

I will tell you a story. My dad at 76 yr old, had traveled many times with his same wallet. One flight, after X-raying his wallet a 1/2 razor blade was fished out of his wallet, my dad was like :eek6 and had to say sorry and offer apologies and the blade was disposed. It was in his wallet for many years and passed countless time in flight checks.

After 9/11 the metal detectors were so sensitive that a business card in my shirt pocket that had a unique tin foil seal on it set off the detectors. It took a while to figure out what was doing it.
I think most places are more concerned about guns and explosives than they are a .223 round. Most probably thought it was a pen. Perhaps repacking for the one day trip moved other detectable things around which made it more obvious.

If that had been discovered in the US, the TSA lets someone through security after confiscated the round. The notice for the expensive "civil fine" appears in the mail about a month later. So I guess "Bart" is lucky that it is in the UK.

As far as the prior checkpoint go, you realize all the the TSA stuff is "security theater", where the show is designed to put the sheeple at ease and provide deniability to our overseers who will explain they "did everything they could" when the next "event" happens. It also serves nicely as sheep training.

Been there done this, 9mm round in a camera bag. The TSA agent thought it was WAY more of a problem than I did. Footnote, don't interject humor with a panicked TSA agent.....I thought I was going to be "face down in the pebbles" :rules:

So far my range routine regarding ammo has not changed. The ammo always goes in the ammo can. I don't have a range bag yet, so the ammo can is pretty much my range bag. The guns have their own bags or cases.

There are countless cases of people making it through screenings with loaded guns, knives, saw blades, razor blades, and who knows what else. It's bound to happen, but that's also why a lot of folks refer to it as security theater.

I'm lost, was this a dream of yours or did it happen to a "buddy" of yours. :biggrinjester:

I travel (well used to 3 years ago) a whole bunch. It was not uncommon to hit 150K miles on one airline and 50k-75k on other airlines combined. I'm a 2 million miler with AA and got that in about 8 years. I have seen all kinds of stuff make it though security. I won't tell of my own personal cases 'cause you never knos who's reading.

I have buddies that made it though with a handgun and folding locking knives. One person I know, and he is an honest guy, had his EDC and made it through the scanner (not detector) without any issues. He flew to Newark and promptly picked up a FedEx box and shipped it home to a close friend.

My bad experience was all because of the Estes rocket engines. Me and the boys were out shooting rockets off on a weekend and we always practice Leave No Trace. All the spent engines went in to the trunk for the trash can at home. That evening I had to leave for a trip. I threw my bag in the trunk and get popped for a random swab of the bag. All kids of bells and whistles went off and I was escorted to a "private room" for some additional questions. This was right around 6 / 12 months after 9/11.

In the end, they couldn't find anything in my bag or on me. It took them a while to believe my story about the rocket engines.

Thats what Barts thinks as well, London was the only time he pulled out a sharpie from his backpack and never put it back. Perhaps that Sharpie was concealing it somehow.

Bart in the heat of the moment did think it might have been better if a TSA agent had found it. At least he could have argued that hes from Texas...
The UK being so anti-gun was a wild card to him.
But since you mention a possible fine, and considering how it turned out, it probably went the best possible way for him.
However he does wonder if he is now banned from the UK.. Maybe they looked at it closer once he had already left and realized it was a real round.
Who knows... anyone have a UK official friend?

Well Sir, we never know who is reading indeed... so for now, its a friends dream... that actually happened to his friends' brother-in-law's adopted sons' twin brother.

I have a "friend" who has been through security with a full magazine for a 1911 by accident. One he realized he had it, he unloaded the rounds and threw them in the trash...

I have a Swiss-Tech Utili-Key on my keyring, and it has been on several post-9/11 flights with me. It's no bigger than a car key or house key, and it's just part of my regular EDC stuff:

Ironically, under newly proposed guidelines, it will become legal if these guidelines are passed. But, it totally illustrates the point that all of this is nothing more than theater, and they're not nearly as clever or thorough as they think they are.

I am certainly not recommending nor endorsing the idea, but I would love to see some people start getting irate and punching those TSA rent-a-cop wannabees in the face.
