Dallas PD: They were good, even though I wasn't.

Boy, am I racking them up lately

Last week, my wife was visiting her folks, and had some kind of issue over there and wanted to come home early. She called me, asking her to pick her up at the airport. She was coming home RIGHT NOW and wanted me to come get her.

Well, I was at work, and couldn't get down there right away, and BOY did she let me have it.
So I was in a really rotten mood.

So I finally get down to Love, and call her. She hadn't even gotten her bags yet! That made my mood even better.

Then, one of the officers comes up telling me I had to move.

So I moved. VERY quickly. Squealing my tires.

As I came back around, the officer indicated that he wanted to have a few words with me.

And boy, he let me have it. (I did deserve it, after all.)
He gave me the whole riot act in his, "I'm in charge here!" voice.
He asks for my ID, and provide my ID and CHL.
He took one look, and asked me, "Is it on you??"
"Yes, tucked under my shirt."
"We're not going to have a problem here, are we?"
"No, Officer."
"Good."

He went and checked on me, and a few minutes later, came back.
"Ok, so you have a clean record, and you're a CHLer. I'm guessing your'e just having a bad day. Cool it."
He didn't write me a ticket, and I apologized to him profusely.

Dallas PD was very professional with me, considering I was already pretty upset when they nabbed me. I was treated somewhat forcefully (verbally) but well within what I deserved. I was not disarmed, or even pulled out of my car.

Nitro wasn't about to 'blow' was he?

Good business in apologizing and keeping your cool... albeit a bit after the fact.

Good to hear how a potentially bad situation can be resolved in the positive manner!

Gee, I'd have pointed out that DART has pretty good service between the airport and the divorce court, and I'll be there when I get there.

Perhaps a letter to his supervisor detailing how professional he was, and how you appreciate his understanding would be in order.

I doubt those guys get nice letters very often.

I actually did send one, I feel the same way you do; these guys should be recognised either way.

That's precicely why I posted this; as I think the guy was completely reasonable with me, considering the state of mind I was in at the time.

Love is very easy to pickup people at.

I park at the Winged Statue turnaround area until the passenger calls me and tells me they are curbside.

That's about the best idea.

Nitro, was the LEO a short guy with glasses and a mustache riding a bicycle?

They are pretty tough on stopping and standing there at Love, and don't take well to jackrabbit starts.

We used to have great fun betting on how many times a particular vehicle would circle before their passenger finally showed up.

O'Hare is more fun. People park in the pickup lane and run inside, and before they are gone a couple of minutes the car is on the hook and gone.

Nitrogen - thanks for handling yourself in a professional manner. Everyone needs to remember that each individual CHL holder represents all CHL holders as a group to LE officers. Many of today's officers have not been brought up around guns and for the most part (unless they have some military experience) they have no understanding of the concept of gun ownership from a positive standpoint.

The majority of the people that LE officers run into with handguns are bad guys - at least in the larger cities. I'm sure that DPS Troopers who do a lot of traffic stops come across a fair amount of CHL holders and the same goes with Game Wardens.

Anyway, thanks for the kind comments regarding the bike officer and LE in particular.

Take care and stay safe.

Welcome aboard CHL/LEO. I hope you stay with us and offer your experience. We have a good number of LEO's, both active and retired, and it's always good to have opinions from both sides of the badge.

Chas.

He was in his mid 20's I guess, clean cut, with brown hair. I didn't see a bicycle; he was on foot. He was the type of guy that can get your attention quite easily with a gesture or just a look (I really can't explain it)

I'll remember the waiting area next time I have to do this.

Love is very easy to pickup people at.
Park at the area mentioned, circle, or wait until your party calls you on a cell phone - just don't park in the designated "No Parking/Standing" areas.

A lot of people forget that the DPD officers that work at Love Field are tasked with enforcing both City of Dallas ordinances and TSA regulations (especially the parking restrictions that they dictate). If you ask most bike officers that work there what they do they will reply, "I teach reading eight hours a day. I ride up to people illegally parked, tap on their window, and then point to the "No Parking/Standing" sign next to their car. Some of them are slow learners and you have to keep pointing it out to them."

FYI - "most" officers out there will not write you a ticket unless you do one or two things (or perhaps both): park your car unattended in a No Parking zone or argue with the officer. Be courteous with the police officer and you will be OK - it's the same formula that we use when we get pulled over or come into contact with police officers when we're off duty. If you do start off on the wrong foot like nitrogen did quickly plead your "mea culpa", say you're sorry and you will probably be okay.
