Made another plunge

Post by Commander »

Several months ago, I was having a discussion with The Marshal over my next handgun purchase. XD-45 or M&P? I went back and forth several times before making a purchase of a new XD-45 in December. Love that gun - it shoots well.

Recently, I got the "fever" again. I got the "cure" today - a new M&P 9mm! So now I have both guns that I was deciding between just 8 months ago. Took the new M&P out to Targetmaster today and found that it shoots well too. The problem now is that I shoot better with both new guns than I do with my namesake - my S&W6946. I think it has to do with the long, and heavy trigger pull of the DAO 6946. So now I'm thinking - do I sell the 6946? It is smaller than either of the other two and is more concealable. And I seem to recall that somewhere on this forum someone once posted a quote to "never reduce your inventory of guns".

If I sold the 6946, I could do one of those "Prince" things and become "The forum member formerly known as S&W6946."

Sounds like you made some good choices. Ya know I've yet to even pick up an M&P, but they sure look comfy to hold.

As far as the 6946 goes, well if your looking for opinions, I'll offer one...don't sell it.

I started my CHL days with a S&W 642 and a S&W 908. I have since built up a descent collection of firearms, and a 2 1/2" or 4" K frame are now my daily carry. However when I need a small framed revolver or pistol the 642 or the 908 are the one's I reach for. Like your 6946 they are small and slim, very easy to conceal in any attire. Those size firearms hide wonderfully in a Kangaroo holster when going to church or some formal "buttoned up and tucked in" events.

Unless you're needing some money, try to hang onto that Smith, it's a good one. I don't shoot my 908 as well as the 4" wheelgun either, but a small semi-auto has it's purpose. You'd probably find yourself missing it . ;-)

JLaw,

You are problaby right. I remember reading some posts on the Smith&Wesson forum from members who had sold their 6946s and later regretted it. It is a nice gun, I am just not consistent with it.

An unused gun in the vault is a good savings account. It's not going to go down in value, and might even appreciate over the years. Several forum members who have gone through life crises have been happy they had held onto their guns, because they were a good source of cash when they most needed it.

Never sell a gun unless you absolutely have to.

Well, I won't say to never reduce your gun inventory, but there are very few guns I have sold or traded away from that i did not miss later on and wish I had kept. I am thinking of a new Ruger Mark III now for the kids to learn on. If I get one, it will be about the fourth of that type (Ruger 22 pistol, the others were Mark II's) I have had.

And I do have a short list of pistols I am looking for again, if I ever find one for sale. Top on the list is an S&W Model 25, blued, six inch barrel, in .45 ACP. Most accurate revolver I have ever owned.
