My wife really loves me!

Post by K.Mooneyham »

So, a few days ago, my wife had to go to the Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base to do some things. Their Base Exchange Store has all kinds of stuff, like a Sears for the military, sort of. I later met her for lunch in Lake Worth at the In-n-Out burger place. She told me to open the rear door to her vehicle and look what she had in there. I'm thinking, what now? But, lo and behold, much to my surprise there was a brand new Ruger American bolt-action rifle in .30-06! I was about dumbfounded. I guess they had it for such a good price that she couldn't pass it up (she must have looked online, I guess). She knew I didn't have any sort of modern "hunting rifle", and I had been complaining that the only ammo anyone seemed to have in stock was for that sort of firearm, so she bought me one. Over lunch, I told her I couldn't shoot it without a scope because it doesn't have iron sights. She said that she was getting a bonus from her work and it would have to wait for a few days...so, today she got paid the bonus and I went and bought a Redfield Revolution 3-9x40mm scope and Warne medium rings to put on it. I'm not going to post any pics just yet, not until I can take it to the range and get it dialed in. But, I'll make sure I take a couple of the groups I shoot with it, as well as a picture of the rifle itself. Yep, my wife really love me!

Well, I FINALLY got to take the rifle to the range today. I took 60 rounds with me, figuring that would be plenty to shoot since .30-06 is not a popgun. I had previously sighted the rifle with one of those bore-lasers at 25 yards. So, I started at 50 and it looked like I was dialing it in okay. But it seemed like I never could quite get it where I wanted it. Kept thinking it was me. Fired 48 rounds, all total, at 50 and 100 yards. Never got better than 4x4 inches for three shots at 100 yards. After I got home, I realized I had made a rookie mistake. The scope rings were slightly loose on the mounts; I realized I forgot to loctite the screws!

Any day shooting at the range is okay with me, but it sure stinks to waste so much ammo on such a dumb mistake. Not only due to the cost, but just because anything that is reasonably priced for range use gets sold out so quick these days. Well, lesson learned, I guess. The screws are now loctited, and retightend, and the scope re-zeroed. I'm sure it will go a lot better next time.

I wanted to add an update to this. Sometime after the rifle was purchased for me, I went online and filled out info on the Ruger website to receive a cheek-pad/butt-cuff for free. It didn't come after a few weeks and I kind of wrote it off. Well, lo and behold, on Saturday a package showed up at the house and yes, it was the cheek-pad. I guess Ruger has just been backlogged and it took them a while to get to it. So kudos to them for following through, better late than never. I've also since added a basic bi-pod to the rifle. If I get some time this evening, I'll try to take a picture of the rifle and add it to this post. Now I just need to find some time to get that thing to the range again!

You must be a keeper as well. Congrats! :thumbs2:

Mine too!

Early in our marriage, now going on 33 years, my wife bought me a Remington 760 Gamemaster pump 30.06. It ended being a wonderful choice and is still my primary hunting rifle.

A couple of years ago she bought me a Ruger Mini-14 to replace one that I had before I was married, and which I had to sell way to cheap to 'get by' back in our broke days. I guess she got tired of me whining about it for 20 years. Anyway, it has proved to be my 'Tactical Black Rifle' of choice.

She also got me a Lasermax for my Glock 30 for Christmas.

What a gal!

I am sure you are thankful for yours too.

Isn't it amazing when two people have similar interests, that times like these happen. Congrats on having keepers. Mine has kept me 35 years in November. :clapping:
