Need scope suggestion

Post by lfinsr »

I just bought a Savage .17HMR last weekend. It came as a package with a scope on it but it's less than spectacular. I'm looking for suggestions from someone that has first hand experience with a better scope. I'm not looking to spend more on the scope than I spent on the rifle, this is just a plinker. Anyone with suggestions?

Thanks,
Larry

I purchased a Bushnell 3x9 Banner from Academy for my Ruger 10/22. About $80 or so, nice scope for the $$$!!

I have a cool scope here. It is a 1.5 - 4X with a bullet drop compensator. http://texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=64968" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's what it came with that I'm not satisfied with. Don't know the model but it's definitely Bushnell 3x9. Maybe it's my eyes and not the scope.

That is the most common recommendation that I've seen. It seems though that people either love it or hate it. Perhaps they are comparing it to higher quality optics?

Do you own one? If you went to the store to buy it and they were out what's the second choice? I was also looking at a Cabela's brand that seemed to get about the same reviews and was in the same price range.

Thanks, but I need more magnification for my old eyes.

I've heard great things about the Mueller APT. I bought one but have yet to even see it... it's going onto my new Savage MKII TRR-SR as soon as I get home

I own a couple of BSA's and have been happy with them all. I have the Sweet 22 right now and it works great. It is not the highest quality scope obviously, but for a rimfire rifle it is a great choice. I have a buddy that is a gunsmith and a hunting guide and he has a BSA on his 243 WSSM and has put thousands of prairie dogs to rest with it. If they didnt have a BSA and I was looking for a rimfire scope that worked well and was around $100, I would go somewhere that did have a BSA.

I also have the Bushnell 3-9x on my Ruger 10/22 (also not sure exactly what model the Bushnell is) - it's an okay scope for my needs which is varmint control on our small ranch. If I was into target shooting, I would want a better scope (heck, if I was into target shooting, I wouldn't use the 10/22 ;-) .)

Thanks for the input guys. I haven't ever heard of Mueller before so I'll check into those also. A quick search for the BSA comes up blank. I can find them on Amazon but would prefer not to give my money to them.

Thanks

optic shopping is serious buisness.

In your price range your main concern is mechanical operation.

you want adjustments that work well.

I personaly like the center point 3-9x adventure scopes offered by walmart.

these have mediocre glass but dead on adjustments, great illumination , and an illuminated mil dot reticule at 9x power. (since the scope's reticle is second focal plane it only can be used at 9x)
