Gunsafe selection plus more

Post by 1s1k52 »

I currently own 4 guns total. 2 break over shotguns a 30-06 and a glock. Ideally in my life time I doubt I ever own more than 10 or more rifles. Same maybe can be said with pistols. I have read about safes and recommendations of where to start and about all I can decide for sure is I want an electronic keypad.

Questions

1. Can I keep my safe in my garage?

2. What brands and items to stay awy from

3. Do you keep your bulk ammo in your safe?

4. Fire proof specs to look at if any?

Anything else anyone wants to add let me know. Academy had some I liked but again I know nothing so?? Seems like its an extra 500 or more to have it delivered and installed from them that normal?

My budget is really know more then 600 especially since the install and delivery may cost me a fortune! Ideally a 20 gun safe with shelves and has the ability to have bags for pistols or
Personal items?

1. You could but I prefer my safe in my home because it keeps it in a climate controlled environment and keeps it hidden from anyone driving by while I have my garage door open. Make sure you mount it to the concrete, not mounting a safe is dumb. That is like installing seat belts into your car and never bulking up.

2. Anything made in China, I got a 24 gun Winchester for $699 on sale, not the best protection but its a good safe for the money.

3. Yes

4. My safe has a 1hr fire rating for 1400 degrees. Good rating for a safe under 1k.

I suggest you reconsider your decision to have a push button lock on your main safe. IMO they MAY be ok for secondary safes but I would not have one on my "real" safe. S&G Dial locks are made in the USA. My bet is that ALL of the electronic locks are made in China. Their internal parts are not strong at all.

Liberty makes a good safe but you won't get one for 600.
Add another 400 or so and you will get into the Colonial.

But you can find them for less than retail due to "Scratch & Dent" sales sometimes. Guys haul these around to gun shows and they get scratched. They will touch up the paint and sell them for less than retail.

1. Always buy a bigger safe than you think you will need.
2. Use a safe as a deterrent - any safe can be broken in to so have insurance. Some can be broken into in minutes so think about your needs. If you live somewhere that would allow a thief hours to go through your stuff (i.e. living in the country with very little traffic) then get the best safe you can. You get $2500 free insurance with an NRA membership, not bad for $35 a year. Use that as a backup plan.
3. Tractor Supply has some decent safes for reasonable prices. Yes, there are saves that most thieves would not get into but most firearm owners will not spend several thousand up to tens of thousands on them. Now, some people may have a double gun worth 50-100k that need a better safe but the average person probably does not have one so a cheaper safe can be used to deter thieves.
4. Secure the safe as good as possible. Anchor it to your slab to deter the thrives.
5. I would not place a safe in my garage unless it was climate controlled.
6. I used the moving company advertised at Bass Pro ( I cannot recall the name) and it cost about$400 to have it moved.

I know I'm asking a lot for very little but surely a middle ground. I am renting what would mounting a safe do long term? Nothing carpet and paint couldn't fix no?

I have a really good home insurance that covers quite a bit including my fire arms.

I was goin to buy a "stack on" jus to have SOMETHING but was thinking for a few more hundred get a safe I could have for life. I have kids in and out and want it more for that and so they don't sit in cases full time. Plus let's be honest having a gun safe is just cool in general

If you own or have access to a pickup truck there is no use to have a delivery service deliver your safe. You will also need a decent set of dollies also. We have two safes that weigh 750 lbs. and 650 lbs. The wife and I put both of them in our house and did not have any problems. The people where you buy the safe will help you load it in the truck and you get to do the rest.

Just be sure to lay the safe down in the truck to haul it. Just go slow and take it easy so as not to hurt yourself. A $600 dollar safe should weigh 500 lbs. or less so it should not be too hard of a job.

When a safe says "24 gun" where is that supposed to fit and how? The space looks
Like it would fit half what they say or do they count pistols? ACADEMY had one with shelves that could be removed for more long gun space. I will try to find the brand

Generally speaking if it says 24 guns it means how many it will hold without the half shelves in the safe. With the shelves in it will only hold 12 at the most and that is without scopes mounted on guns.

Makes sense. I know a guy who, not sure how big his safe is but it's big, pistols all over it and all the long guns are stacked leaning on each other. So by te sounds of it I need something above 24 guns. Bit of a neat freak

Make the drive down to Garland and visit The Safe Company.

These guys will educate you about safes and work with you to get a safe that meets your needs.

I used to worry about the garage....

While a garage is not the best place, some of us do not have a suitable in house option. I use a goldenrod and have had NO issues in a garage for over 10 years. Just be sure to "hide" it from view with garage door open. 1 rifle with a cheap blueing job hasn't even been wiped off since I put it in there (purposely) and it looks as good as the day I put it up... it serves as my test piece for the rest of the lot. Yes, I would rather have my safe in my house but until we complete an addition and renovation- it's simply not an option. I think a safe in the garage beats the tar out of guns in a closet. :iagree: That's where I bought my Liberty at a very reduced price because of scratches (touched up) on the back side of the safe.
