I don't know about everyone else, but when rounds are mentioned, they instantly bring to mind a single gun that I identify with as "this is a FILLINTHEBLANKcaliber"
For me for example:
"A .38 Special" is a policeman's gun. A Colt Official Police or S&W M10
"A 9mm" is a Beretta 92/M9
"A .357 Magnum" or "Magnum" is a Colt Python
"A .44 Magnum" is a....(do I have to say this?) S&W M-29
"A .45 Automatic" is a Colt/Springfield/Remington 1911A1
"A Colt .45" is a Single Action Army
"A Snub Nose .38" is a Colt Detective Special
What gun do you identify with certain calibers?

Similar thoughts, but ...
9mm - I think of Luger first, Browning Hi-Power second.
.45 ACP - The original 1911
Other cartridges:
.32 ACP - Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless
.25 ACP - Baby Browning
9mm - I think of Luger first, Browning Hi-Power second.
.45 ACP - The original 1911
Other cartridges:

The sooner I get behind, the more time I have to catch up.

Re: What gun do you identify with certain calibers?
To me, some guns are almost synonymous with certain calibers.
Such as (and I know some have posted several of these):
.45 ACP - Government Model 1911
.45 Colt - Colt Peacemaker
.30-06 - Springfield M1903
7.92x57mm - Mauser Rifle
7.62x39mm - AK-47
9mm Luger - Parabellum Model 1908 and Browning Hi-Power
.38 Special - S&W Model 36 (Chief's Special)
.357 Magnum - S&W Model 28 (Highway Patrolman)
.45-70 - Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield
5.56x45mm - M-16/AR-15
7.62x51mm - M-14/M-1A
7.62x54r - Mosin-Nagant 91/30 Rifle
.22LR - Ruger 10-22
.44 Magnum - S&W Model 29
Obviously, there are many more firearms that have used each of these rounds, but this is just a list that comes to mind as I think of each one.

My AK is better than your Glock

In any caliber as long as it ends in x39mm, that is 7.62 or 5.45.
