Quick confirmation on law for barrel length

Post by nyj »

I'm looking into buying a complete AR with a 14.5" barrel + a 1.5" brake/flash suppressor that is pinned. This is legal in TX, correct?

Thanks

AFAIK, it should be, but you need to be extremely certain that the total length isn't so much as 1.3 trillionths of an inch less than 16", or the ATF will throw you in jail for the rest of time.

Also, it's been a while since I've checked into that kind of stuff.

It's out of state, so I may try and get his FFL/gunsmith to triple check the measurements.

My understanding is that it must be permanent, meaning it can't be removed with hand tools. If the pin was welded in place or the threads brazed it would be ok. If you can simply knock the pin out and remove the flash suppressor it wouldn't pass.

This is nothing more than an opinion formed from reading other materials and forums. YMMV :tiphat:

This is my understanding as well.

A short barrel is OK if the muzzle device - brake, compensator, whatever - is "permanently" attached. This means high-temp silver solder (I want to say with an 1100 deg melting point, but I could be wrong on this number), welding, or a blind pin. I'd go at least 1/4" longer than the 16" statutory minimum, just to be safe.

Note that the "approved" way to measure barrel length is from the bolt face (when the bolt is closed) to the end of the muzzle/muzzle device. Usually this is done by closing the bolt on an empty chamber, and then dropping a rod down the barrel and marking it at the muzzle end - then measuring from the end to the mark.
