Re: Having trouble getting that ring off?
Back in my high school days I had a buddy call me late-late one night needing help. He said his girlfriend had her finger stuck in the hole of one of the spokes of his steering wheel. He said to hurry & bring a hacksaw cuz her mother was big time irate.
I told him I wasnt gonna fall for it and hung up the phone! He called back and after begging and pleading I agreed to come over and check it out. I warned him of the consequences if he was trying to pull one over on me.
Such a funny scene when I arrived; It was a hot and muggy night - in the driveway the girl's mother was standing next to the truck in her bathrobe - her arms angrily crossed and wearing an expression that would have stopped a charging tiger!
The girl was tearfully whining about her finger and the mosquitoes....and my buddy was holding a flashlight trying to swat the mosquitoes. He was nervous, sweating, hyperventilating & on the verge of panic.
YEP! That finger was not going anywhere without that spoke, so I sawed the section out and in the house we went. Soap didnt help, pulling and twisting didnt help.....and I then remembered reading about this string trick....it worked!
Afterwards the girl's mother thought I was the most brilliant guy who had ever chewed gum! She told everyone that she would be proud to have someone like me as a son-in-law

It might have been smarter to remember the string trick before sawing the section out unless you wanted to teach your buddy a lesson.

I wish I had known about this trick years ago when I had to use a pair of wire cutters to get my (now ex) wife's wedding ring off.

I've actually used this trick several times in the ER to remove rings. It's an old one, but a good one. I have other stories about removing things that people have managed to get stuck onto parts of their bodies..... but that's not for this forum....

Re: Having trouble getting that ring off?
I was about to cut the wedding band off a woman who was in a wreck and her hand was swelling badly when one of the other EMTs suggested that we try wrapping a thread around the finger and slipping the ring off. The ring was a family heirloom, having been worn by several generations, mother to daughter, since the 1840s, and the woman was very very upset that the ring was going to be destroyed. Her finger was already blue when I slipped the ring cutter under the ring and it seemed touch and go whether it would survive the incident (the finger that is, the damage to the hand, sticking out the window of the car during the wreck, was extensive.) The thread worked.

Were they able to reattach her finger afterwards?I wish I had known about this trick years ago when I had to use a pair of wire cutters to get my (now ex) wife's wedding ring off.
