"Equipment" question...sort of...

Post by Busykngt »

Couldn't really find the right topic area to post this question in and it's really more of a legal-type question anyway. The subject is: KNIVES, well okay really, specifically: Bayonets! :eek6

During the process of reading the Texas CHL laws concerning "illegal" weapons, I ran across the defination of an "illegal" knife. As I recall, it said a knife with a blade over 5.5 inches long is defined as illegal. [And a Bowie Knife is illegal in TEXAS.... really?... I mean, REALLY??... a BOWIE knife?]

Does that make my USMC bayonet I bought for my M4 illegal? Or my circa 1943 bayonet I bought for my M1 Garand?

And in the sacred land of The Alamo, why in heaven's name is a Bowie Knife illegal? :txflag:

[Besides, I don't think a read in the penal code the exact defination of what a "Bowie" knife is or should look like... is that like pornography... you're just supposed to know it when you see it? {...the Bowie Knife, I mean} ] I've seen some *almost* looking Bowie knives..but not quite. ;-)

Those knives are NOT illegal to own, just to carry.

"Carpet baggers" were and are not the problem, just a convenient scapegoat. Texas's repressive gun and knife laws were self-inflicted wounds by Texas courts and legislature, and maintained for over 150 years, long after "carpet baggers" disappeared. It took the rise of the descendent party of the "carpet bagger" side of that war to start restoring 2A rights in Texas.

But to answer the OP's question, blades 5.5" or longer are illegal to carry in public, but not illegal possess. And no, Bowie knives are not really described in the law, and yes it is a shame that they are "illegal" (for carry) in the land of the Alamo.
