TSA PreChecked

Post by grumpy »

Just flew and my boarding pass was TSA Pre, along with my wife. I have never filled out an application for this. Suspect this is because of CHL. Anyone else?

I fly all the time...
it has nothing to do with CHL

The airlines are allowed to "give" pre-CHECK to anyone they feel

Realistically, I think they put some algorithm in their system to "profile" the candidates who have less chance of needing to do the full screening.

I travel every week, or every other at worse, and there are times where entire families are in the preCHECK line and they had no clue how either.

Don't have an answer for you as I haven't flown in over 5 years, but wanted to say welcome to the forum.

I am not sure how the airlines get the pre-check program done. I do know you can apply and pay for a five year license for it. If you fly a lot, that might be worth it but it certainly was not worth it to me.

I flew to Philly last April and received the pre-check from Southwest. Since it was for a funeral and the ticket had been bought that morning, I was kind of surprised about it. I had not heard of the program and when I researched it, I thought it was from my previously having been cleared by TSA for a CDL with hazmat (requires the federal background check). Never did find out how I got it.

I now have reservations to fly back to Philly at thanksgiving. My wife and I are going back for my high school reunion, so there was plenty of time. I actually bought the tickets the first day the airlines put them on sale in June (six months before flight). I am hoping I get the pre-check again, and wondering what will happen if I do and my wife doesn't.

I would love to know what the guidelines for the airlines are, especially for Delta.

Don't believe a chl has anything to do with it and I think its just random, I just flew a couple of weeks ago and my wifes boarding pass had the pre check on it and mine did not and she doesn't have a chl but I do

If you travel a lot, consider applying for global entry under the goes program. If you have a CHL the background check shouldn't be an issue. Once you get the card, you enter your goes number into your frequent flyer profile. I have it on my united and my southwest profiles and get prescreen all the time. For the airlines, frequent flyer plus background check (goes) equals prescreen.

Once you get global entry nexus (Canadian entry ) and APEC (Asia pacific country entry) are easy as well.

Supporting the other statements that were posted here, I suggest you review this other thread from a couple months ago. Several of us posted a lot of information regarding PreCheck, Global Entry, etc.

If you had the benefit of PreCheck and have never signed up for it, then perhaps you're the beneficiary of some new program that has been started since I began down this path. Good for you, and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for all of the replies and welcomes.

From what I've read, airlines don't designate Pre or not. It is the TSA that designates if you have it or not. Also read that TSA is expanding the program. Since I am not military and etc or have never filled out application, the only thing I could come up with being different is the concealed background check. Having the concealed background check seems more logical than just out of the blue getting TSA Pre.

Once again, thanks for the info.

TSA does a random handout of pre-check. They want you to buy into the program.

Last time we flew as a family my teenager got a pre-check mark on the boarding pass (both ways!), but none of the other family members got it. Wife and I fly a lot for work (well over a million miles for me), but no pre-check, ever. Go figure.

I signed up through American during the testing phase. I get it about 95% of the time. It was free because of my status.

I was selected for the quick pass through recently but I thought someone took a look at me and decided I was harmless.
Don't know how to feel about this.

My SO flies here into DFW just about every week. She's been randomly selected a couple of times for the pre-check. She has her CHL.

When I was working for Travelocity (Sabre), they had TSA come out onsite for the Pre-check application & interview. You had to have flown a minimum number of times in the last year before you could qualify for it, but if you qualified, you could get it on site. I very briefly considered it, but I don't fly enough.
