Newb question here:
When you go to get a CHL - do you have to send off for the application before you go to class, or do they have applications at the class?
regarding the application being sent from Austin: how long does it usually take to receive the packet in the mail? Can one simply go and pick one up from DPS in Austin?
thanks, in advance

I signed on and did an on-line question-air and paid the fee of $140.00 then I had my packet in the mail in less then a week, and made the appointment for my class the next weekend then sent all back in.
I got my CHL back in a little less then 30 days.

I recommend that you find a "full service" instructor that will give you the application and do the photos and fingerprints. Otherwise you will give people the opportunity to point fingers when something goes wrong.
Instructors in Austin have been recommended here. I just haven't paid attention. You can click the Search button at the top of the page and search for Austin instructors.
You will not speed up the process by getting an application directly from DPS, and people sometimes screw up when they try to do things on their own.
