A true hero by any stretch of the imagination. A brave soldier who saved many of his troops lives. God bless him! :patriot:

Why did it take 49 years before he was recognized for his extraordinary actions?

During the thirty eight hour battle and forty eight hours of escape and evasion, fighting with mortars, machine guns, recoilless rifles, small arms, and hand grenades, it was estimated that Sergeant First Class Adkins killed between one hundred thirty five and one hundred seventy five of the enemy while sustaining eighteen different wounds to his body.

Wow!!!!! That man is awesome. A literal one man army. I agree with many who are wondering how he wasn't recognized almost immediately. The award was long overdue.

He told the story that as they were escaping, there were tigers following and circling
the group, attracted by the smell of the blood of the wounded. Sometime during the night,
the enemy, he said more afraid of the tigers than of them, pulled back. That allowed his party to disengage,
and effect their escape.

Amazing story.

It would make on heck of a movie. I'd watch it.

His story is amazing, but you should google Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez. His story is even more amazing. (He also received the Medal of Honor.) He was wounded 37 times, including being bayoneted twice and clubbed in the jaw with a rifle butt, which broke his jaw.

Oftentimes people get recommended for medals but the records get misplaced. Sometimes researchers stumble across them and bring them to the attention of the right people, and the medal is bestowed on the recipient years after the action in which he earned it. At a reunion of the 5/7 Cav in Springfield last year a fellow received the Bronze Star for action in Vietnam. Some of his buddies worked for years to get the medal approved.

Words cant convey what this giant of a man accomplished. I find it a shame that his medal was defiled by the unworthy hands of one who doesnt share his American spirit.

Benavidez is one of my personal heroes. Mucho Hombre. So many gave so much.
