Colt M1911 from 1918

Post by Rex B »

I bought this old mutt a few weeks back. It's a 1918 Colt that had been chromed decades ago. The chrome was about half gone when I got it, but the gun was pretty tight for it's age. The chrome had to go.

I ordered chrome stripper and nickle stripper from Caswell Plating. That didn't work. So I shipped it to APW Cogan in Florida. Got it back last week. Mucho better.

Still needs a trigger job, but she has regained most of her dignity.

I ran across it on the THF forum. Traded a Sig GSR for it, knowing I was getting took ;-)

But I liked it, and now I like it a lot.

I think that chrome protected it over the years. Most of the edges are crisp. The lettering loss is probably from the pre-plate buffing. And the US Govt Property was removed.
The parts seem to be all original, and they fit well.
The barrel has been changed to a Springfield Armory service replacement.

That is a very nice looking piece. Maker? Do you have any history on it? Did it serve in WWII or any other action? Although, you're probably right that the chrome protected it all those years, I do like the looks of it now better.

That is really nice now. Congrats on a nice find and a really nice refinish.

Any history has been lost. The guy I got it from knew nothing about it. Pretty sure the chrome was preWW2
