cleaning after swimming...

So I had the unfortunate duty of diving into a pool the other night...

To the pertinent question here... besides a complete detail strip and drying each piece out, cleaning to remove any chlorine residue and light coat of oil on everything. Is there anything else needed? I assume that if cleaned and oiled I should be good to go. Obviously I also changed my carry ammo.

Did I miss anything?

I would spray all the metal parts with a solvent that displaces water then dries completely.
Brake cleaner maybe?

Would be interested to hear how that ammo behaves when you shoot it.

You probably didn't need to do anything with the ammo other than wipe it off. IIRC, it is sealed pretty well and waterproof and the only real concern with modern ammo would be in getting any kind of oil on it. However, if you were really concerned about it, why not just shoot it up asap and load with new or undunked ammo?

Ok... The back story is a birthday party for kids... pool, waterslides, etc. there were hired life guards there but missed this one. I dove in to pull up a child that was struggling/going down in deeper water. As I was in the air- I had 3 distinct thoughts go through my mind...

1. grab under the arm and come up with him in one motion
2. what's an iPhone 6 cost to buy outright?
3. looks like a complete detail strip tonight

I figure the ammo will shoot but it was under for a while and another 20 minutes before I got to the car and unloaded and towel dried everything... no sense in chancing it. 7 rounds are pretty cheap. (if oil can seep in, can't water also?)

Surface tension of water is too high to penetrate most crimping and primers - but some oils are designed to penetrate.

My shotguns have been dunked multiple times in salt and fresh water. I used to use WD40 on my Remington 1187 but was told that would damage the corrosion resistant finishes on my Benellis (not sure who told me). Based on the possibility of damage, I now use Rem Oil on them. As you state, taking them apart to dry is a good idea. After they dry, I clean and oil them as usual. I routinely shoot shotgun ammo that's been submerged in salt and fresh water (I spray them with oil after they've been submerged to keep the brass from corroding).

As far as pistols go, I've dunked my XD in fresh water a couple of times. I've dried and cleaned with Rem Oil as described above and not had any problems. I shoot the pistol ammo that's been submerged at the range but take it out of service for carry ammo. I don't remember a Failure to Fire in any of that ammo. Submersion times have been in the 5 to 20 minute range while duck hunting.

Nice job on taking action for that child. I've been in that situation before and was shocked at the number of people who stood there watching the child struggle.

As an aside, I've also dunked a phone (also while duck hunting). It was a Blackberry and not an iPhone but I took it apart and laid it on my truck dash. It stayed there for a full day in the sun and I put it back out there the next day. After two full days on my dash in the sun, I got 2 more years out of it...

Not sure that would work with an iPhone but thought I'd offer...

I gave up on the phone... I wasn't able to power it down before it blacked out. Then 3 days in a bag with dehumidifiers and rice with no luck. I needed it for work so I had to replace it. I'l try it again in a week- I read somewhere that a few have come back on after a week, although unlikely.
