But if you do that, then you'll be two seconds incorrect. A leap second in this case adds an additional second, so you need to set your clock back one second (or pause it for a second).

Correct, hold that second hand for just a second. July 1st has to wait a little bit longer tonight. I'm looking forward to the extra sleep.Glockster wrote:But if you do that, then you'll be two seconds incorrect. Does this mean I lose sleep?

No, in this case you get that whole extra second. But as it happens just before 8pm tonight, you probably won't even notice it.

Since we are gaining a second, the clocks need to be set back one second.

No, they're actually adding a second, so some world master clock thing is actually going to show 11:59:60 tonight. I'd provide a link, but I'm trying to conserve time so this really feels like something.Pawpaw wrote:If we follow your advice, the world will end!!!TxD wrote:One second.

Edit to add link. Now I'm going to have to make up some time somewhere...

Most of my clocks synch with the atomic clock on their own. The few that don't are probably off by at least a second and might already be ahead.

Correct. And so any non-adjusted clock would show 12:00:00 at that time. One second later, your non-adjusted clock would snow 12:00:01, but the actual time would be 12:00:00. Your non-adjusted clock is now one second fast, so you need to adjust it back one second.Texsquatch wrote:No, they're actually adding a second, so some world master clock thing is actually going to show 11:59:60 tonight.
Of course, all of this actually occurs at 8:00 Eastern time (7:00 Central) tonight, not midnight, but the example still illustrates it.

Yes. You're gong to miss time it, add 3 seconds and you'll be up all night trying to get back...mojo84 wrote:Does this mean I lose sleep?

I keep mine about 5 minutes ahead all the time so I'm good for the forseeable future...
