I was parusing the usual websites and found this interesting tidbit...
Let me see if I got this straight, and thats why I want ya'll to take a crack at this as well...
If I am an instructor, and lets say I conduct my CHL class, at my home or on my property...And after that class portion is completed and we do the range portion of the class away from my home (which is why I am thinking State Farm may be confused about this issue)...
Why do they risk losing business by cancelling a customers homeowners policy if that customer wants to be insured under that policy for this business...
The letter kinda makes me thing the instructor conducts his class on his property, and that State Farm doesn't like that, so they cancel him...
Since I am not an instructor, it appears that ya'll are required to have some liability insurance to do business as a firearms instructor obviously...
I mean I can understand that the business is a high risk activity, but then again high-rise window washers do some pretty risky things as well, and it requires them to do things that if you don;t do them right, someone could get hurt or killed...
Whats the difference???
Homeowners policy cancelled???

Back on subject, I have heard of this kind of thing several times, one of the advantages of having been married to an "insurance professional" for many years.
When I was thinking of getting my FFL, she found out that our insurance company would cancel our policy if I conducted a "firearms related business" out of our home, even if the FFL were just for my own use. She submitted a strong vote against my getting the FFL, and I never did (I was only going to use it to circumvent NY State law at the time anyway, a loophole that has since been closed.)
Insurance companies see themselves as gods unto themselves, responsible to no one, not even their stockholders, although they talk about that a lot. They make up their own rules until someone with deep enough pockets manages to sue them into submission, or someone manages to attract the attention of a suitable government agency (which I have done.)
I have never had to carry liability for my volunteer firearms instructorship, which could hardly be considered a business, but when my wife and I had our other little home business, we were required to have a $1,000,000.00 policy with about a thousand riders and one of the riders was that we could not conduct what THEY defined as "high risk" business or we would not be covered.
Although State Farm's letter does imply that he conducts classes on his property, that may not be true, it may be just their interpretation of something they learned. Also note that they are claiming that this is a high risk "business" and they are cancelling the homeowners policy, probably something they are allowed to do by the fine print on subparagraph h of section c of page 12 of the addenda to the final....
