Boycott Waffle House- US soldier told to disarm

US Soldier in uniform (I am assuming an MP) was told to disarm or leave. He chose to leave.

Boycott is my idea, not the soldiers.

I don't know about this website, will have to research this further. But for now I'm Boycotting.

Hmmm...the article doesn't make it certain whether or not it was a duty weapon. If not, didn't think that Army uniform regulations permitted carry while in uniform? But I've been in Waffle Houses with LEOs present, in uniform and armed.

You are correct. Been active duty for the last 15 years. We are not allowed to carry a personally owned firearm in uniform.

I never got sick eating something at IHOPs around the country. Can't say the same for Waffle (Grease) House.

First off, the Waffle House is a privately owned franchised business, not a corporate owned location. The OWNER stated it was HIS long time policy to not allow firearms in his establishment. However misguided that may appear to most of us, he has that right. The serviceman in uniform carrying a weapon is unusual I'd think...unless he was an MP he's not authorized to carry, even on base. If he was an MP, then I'm not sure he has any special authority to carry off base. I don't know if his status on base carries any privilege off base or not, since he would not be on duty at the time.

He is a national guard Soldier. He is over an hour away from Knox and 3 hours from Campbell, so he might be close to a National Guard training facility. I'm not sure if he was wearing his uniform for his monthly drill or if he was wearing it just because.

I don't care if he is a Soldier or not, my only beef is that the restaurant denied service based on him practicing his right to be armed. I'll have to visit waffle house when I get back from my deployment. Might have to open carry to see if I get the same reaction.

An article I read about this somewhere said the soldier in question had been involved in a fight a couple of weeks before at this WH and was semi PNG, having nothing to do with a gun. The reporter was not informed of this when the story broke, but now has been informed by the owner/manager.

This might not be a good one to expend patriotic outrage on.

You're military so you tell me - in what situation is it OK for him to walk into a restaurant, in uniform and carrying a sidearm? The ONLY reason this story has any legs is BECAUSE he's military. Joe Nobody doesn't get press for being kicked out of a restaurant for open carrying. The fact this guy did it IN UNIFORM makes me a little angry, considering that he had no business doing it, unless I'm missing a situation where its acceptable.

There is no reason to ever be open carrying in uniform. If he is off post and concealed it's completely fine, although I question whether he was leaving a federal facility with a weapon in his possession. If he is open carrying in uniform there is an issue. We have to adhere to regulations that govern how the uniform is worn. That includes what is attached to us. Simply put it is not authorized. I am really curious why he was in uniform in the first place.

I agree that someone like a carpenter wouldn't be making headlines in this situation. I personally don't like being anywhere outside work in uniform. I prefer a low profile as you never know who may target you. I cringe when I see guys rolling around with Army stickers all over there Windows. I really wonder why he was in uniform in the first place. Was he actually going to his weekend drill? When I get back from emergency leave next week I'll look him up on our email network and see if I can find his unit info.

On a side note, I do think I should be allowed to carry on base if I am licensed in the state I am stationed in.

Edit to add: I remembered I have been on military convoys from Fort Campbell to Fort Knox where we had armed Soldiers. This was to guard the weapons we transported only. So I guess they were open carrying, but they had courier cards authorizing the weapons and we didn't stop at Awful Waffle
