It might have been further back. However, the recent story of Lupe Rivera for Weslaco City Commission is a poignant example. The big issue in the Valley is Politiqueras. Some just go door to door urging people to vote for their candidate. Others engage in more shady practices such as having elderly voters simply sign the absentee ballot and let them handle the voting, address shifting, forgeries, offering cocaine/marijuana in exchange for votes, etc. Gilberto Hinojosa, state Democratic chair, has been complicit in all this, as well. At trial, Hinojosa argued that vote-gathering by so-called “politiqueras” were business as usual in the Rio Grande Valley.
