FFL Requirement For a 22cal. Rifle

Post by hounddog »

I should know the answer to this, but with all the crazy stuff going on, I'm not sure. I've always thought anyone 21 years old or more could purchase a rifle or shotgun flat out/no FFL involved. I'm looking into a used Remington Nylon on a website and it says that an FFL is required. The purchase location is in Kansas and I'm in East Texas. Am I just out of touch with the times? I'd appreciate a little advice on this, as I haven't purchased anything but handguns in the last 7 or 8 years. And Merry Christmas to all, may God give you peace and happiness in the days ahead.

Every gun I have purchased at a store in the last many years have required an ffl. As far as age goes, you can purchase a rifle at 18 years and a handgun at 21 years.

Houndog,

There are a number of reasons that the ad states FFL required. The foremost of which is you are purchasing something in another state. Since it is being shipped it has to go to an FFL who will run the NICS check and have you complete a 4473 form just like every other retail weapon purchase. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, I'm very appreciative. Like I said, I should know this stuff. The only long gun I bought was a side-by-side 12ga. from my brother-in-law, who bought it from a friend needing cash. I knew you had to deal with an FFL on handguns, just couldn't remember about the others. It makes sense, buying from another state. Thanks again for the help.

In-state friend-to-friend sales do not need to go through an FFL, even for a handgun. Buyer in friend-to-friend must be 18 years old and be legally allowed to posses the firearm. To buy from out of state you must have the firearm transferred through an FFL no matter. However, you CAN go out of state and buy a long gun and bring it back if that state allows out of state purchasers. Handguns purchases MUST go through and FFL coming into the state.
