Post by Bitter Clinger »

My BIL just scored one of these semi-rare 9mm revolvers. Its an interesting piece if you haven't seen before:

Nice as a collector item. I love revolvers. Don't know that I would shoot it often. Interesting in how they solved the headspace problem.

I remember when those guns came out. I think a J-Frame revolver in 9mm would be a good gun for some folks who, because of age or infirmity, cannot use an automatic. (My recommendation for those folks now is a Beretta Cheetah, if they can find one.) As the narrator said, 9mm is better than 38 Special, but the recoil is not as harsh as a .357Mag.

That said, the manufacturing complexity would seem to be a deal-killer, unless they went with moon clips.

Is the consensus that .38 spcl is worse than 9mm?

I always thought a .38 spcl case was longer than 9mm though slightly thinner, and hence held more powder. Of course in a 9mm automatic you can have a lot more capacity, so is that why it's considered better?

When I carry a revolver I carry a .357 SP101 with .38 spcl +P loads.

This article may prove helpful:
http://www.ballistics101.com/9mm_vs_.38special.php

The 9mm carries more velocity and therefore increased muzzle energy over the .38, however as the article points out that does not necessarily translate into better stopping power.

Aha...the 9mm case is thicker therefore can be loaded to a higher pressure.... now it makes sense.
