DW Guardian issue

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on which 1911 to buy from my earlier thread. I decided on the Dan Wesson Guardian. Received it at the start of this month and I am well in to the break-in period with 400 rounds through it so far.

The only issue I have is that on occasion the slide is locking back on a non-empty magazine. This started happening after the 200 round mark and is happening once every 6 magazines or so. I am confident that I am not hitting the slide stop inadvertently. Any thoughts as to what could be causing this? I realize that I am still in the break-in period on this gun, and won't be contacting DW until I am past the 500 round mark, but I want to know if there is something I should be looking at.

While the pistol is still dirty, remove the slide stop and look at the underside of the part that protrudes into the breach. Is there a copper streak amid the powder residue? If so, gently file that streak down. You might have to do this 2 or 3 times to completely cure the issue.

It''s caused by the bullet bumping the slide stop & causing it to jump up. If it happens at just the right time, the slide can lock back.

Conveniently enough, I have not cleaned the gun since my last range session where this happened, so I will take a look at it tonight. I am only firing 50 rounds at a time (and then cleaning) during the break-in so it shouldn't have much in the way of powder residue to mask any copper.

Take the recoil spring out to relieve pressure on the slide. Slide it back to where the slide stop catch is. Move the slide stop up and down.. put in an empty mag and observe how the slide stop is behaving.

Is it a standard or extended slide release? Does the slide stop move freely? How much pressure to move it up? The plunger should keep enough pressure on it to keep it down while firing. Slide in an empty mag and it should move up when the mag follower makes contact.

Just for the record, the DW Guardian does NOT come with an extended slide stop.

This one is stock, so no extended slide stop. It's weird. If anything I have a hard time activating the slide stop to lock back with no magazine.

I play with modifications to my Glocks, but this gun seems too nice too mess with.

There does appear to be a copper colored line on the inside edge of the piece. Is this what y'all are talking about?

Should I try to deal with this by sanding, or just contact Dan Wesson?

That's the mark. It's very easy to just take a small file and gently round that edge a bit. Easy does it.

If you don't have gunsmithing files, you can use an ignition point file. (Does anyone still sell those? )

What are these 'ignition point' things you speak of?
