New Suppressor. Use existing Trust or wait until changes

Post by tomneal »

Well
We are almost to the new rules on Suppressors (and other NFA items.)

At this point, if you wanted a new suppressor, would you use your existing trust or would you wait until the new rules go into effect in July?

If you start the process with the trust now, do you have to get extra prints and paperwork done when you pick up your new suppressor in 6 months or so?
See you at the range

Get it done / submitted / bought now. Purchases before the new rules go into effect should be grandfathered in. Purchases after that time for NFA items will need the new requirements met.

I submitted a Form 1 to build a SBR twice under my LLC and screwed up the serial number somehow, so got it rejected. I'm just going to wait and submit it under my own name. If I want to transfer to my LLC later I'll pay the $200 and do it. Nobody else in my family is interested in my NFA stuff and I can't afford any more machine guns.

If it will make you feel better to have someone else listed on your Trust, just let me know and I will be glad to sign the amendment and have it notarized. No need to thank me :biggrinjester:

Why wait, you've still got two months at this point. Avoid the additional $200 and hassle down the road by doing it now. I just submitted two more SBRs yesterday.

Just to clarify, Form 1/4s postmarked (or E-filed Form 1s submitted) prior to July 13th will be grandfathered in, those submitted after that will go through the new rules. Just don't want anyone to think they can buy on July 12th and sneak it in (unless your FFL/SOT is on top of it and mails it same day).

That said best bet is to make sure you're buying from an in-state dealer that has stock on hand so that you're not waiting on a Form 3 at this point. Capital Armory in Austin still seems to have a bunch of stock.
