Third party magazines

Post by LucasMcCain »

Just a quick question about third party magazines. Looking to get quite a few Glock 17 magazines, and the third party ones are significantly cheaper. Anyone have any opinions about any of the various brands? The ones I've seen so far are Promag, Magpul, SGM Tactical, and some clear ones by Elite Tactical Systems. All can be had for about half the cost of a name-brand, but I'll pay the extra money if the cheaper ones are unreliable. Sometimes you get what you pay for, and sometimes what you pay for is just a name brand sticker. Thoughts?

I have one of the Magpul 17 round that came with my Kel-tec sub2000. It works like it's supposed to. I also have a bunch of Glock mags. Everything about the Glock mags just feels better though. I personally will pay the extra and buy Glock. I have not had any failures with the Magpul though.

I have two Magpul G17 magazines. This is incredibly unscientific, but the first time out I only had one of the Magpul mags with me. Shot four or five factory magazines as well. The MP and only the MP would drop out of the pistol after the last round was fired. Did this to me three times. Went back out a week or so later with both MP mags to test if the issue was with both or only the one. I had zero issues. I have used the MP mags multiple times since with zero issues. I have to chock it up to some fluke.

My thoughts: 1) I love that there is competition out there. Keeps manufacturers on their toes. 2) both MPs have run flawlessly after the first issue. 3) it is irrational (because of the flawless performance since) but I can't see myself carrying with one.

My question: Would I buy more? Maybe.

As soon as Magpul makes one for a G21 I'll get a couple and let you know.

I do have one 30 round Promag for my daughters M&P15-22. It has worked just fine so far.

I have two 27rd after market glock magazines for my .45 carbine and they function flawlessly in the carbine, I have only put 100rds thru the gun but there were no issues, I ordered them thru USMACHINEGUN.COM

I have a Promag for one of my handguns simply because the factory mags can take well over a year to get, and I refuse to pay $100+ for a $30 magazine from one of the many 709 magazine scalpers on eBay. I have 3 factory mags and the Promag. While it works ookaay for the range. I don't trust it one bit with my life. Based on the way it feeds, it feels like it's going to have a ftf any given moment.

That said, MecGar mags good mags (as they make most of everyone's factory mags, anyway). I've heard good things about Magpul.
Are 709 mags still hard to come by? I see them everywhere where I am these days... Mom and pop shop and academy in particular. I think Dicks too.

They started showing up after I sold mine....

Thanks for all the responses guys. I really value this forum. I ended up buying Glock brand mags because I found them for about $20 each, which wasn't much more than what the third party ones were selling for. I have one Magpul that came with the Sub 2000, and it functions fine, but it really does feel way cheaper. In the end, I'm glad I paid the extra few bucks a mag for the name brand. Still keeping an eye out for a reasonably priced drum for the Sub2k, though. :fire
