Issue carrying and getting holes in shirts
All,
I have a constant issue with at least a few different types of holsters. I seem to get tiny holes in shirts (mostly t-shirts, even quality ones) when carrying. This happens OC or CC.
I am assuming this is due to sharp edges on the pistol - is this something a gunsmith could help with, and what would be a reasonable price to pay for rounding off the edges (and is this even advisable to do in the first place)?

I have not had this experience. What are you carrying?

Like labrat said, I think it's only when there is pressure holding the shirt to the gun, such as in a car, or a reach or something and drag the shirt along the gun. Might have to try the washcloth trick, or just unholster in the truck.

Looking at a picture of that pistol, I think the most likely culprit would be the magazine floor plate.
It might have sharp edges or even a burr or two. You should be able to round those off with a small file.

Thanks. I'd not considered this trick to prevent the little holes from rubbing, or the seatbelt as being a major contributing factor. I haven't noticed holes forming in the appendix carry position nearly as much as when I carried primarily OWB at 3-o'clock. Now that I think about it, this didn't seem to be much of an issue with IWB 4-o'clock.labrat1001001 wrote:I had the same issue and found that it was happening (for me) while driving. I now leave a wash cloth in my vehicle, and before buckling-up, I lift my shirt and place the wash cloth between the pistol and seat. This stops shirt wear and vehicle seat wear as well.

I had a similar issue with my mag carrier for my 1911's. I was using the mags that came with my Dan Wesson's which have a very thin and long metal floor plate. When I sat down, they had a tendency to dig into my side. Fortunately, I had some other 1911 mags that had a rounded, plastic floor plate, so I just switched them out.Pawpaw wrote:Looking at a picture of that pistol, I think the most likely culprit would be the magazine floor plate.

You should be able to match up the holes with the gun to see what is causing your issue. Since it is a polymer gun, you might even be able to round off the offending edge(s) yourself with some sandpaper. I had to do that after I installed an extended mag release on my G26 that interfered with the holster I was using.

I have been carrying Glocks since 2004 and have not had that problem with any regular shirt, including thin golf shirts.
There has to be a burr or some flash on something.

Thanks, I will look at the mag plate carefully and anywhere else. I just didn't want to take a file to anything out of the blue. Have a good 4th everyone :)

I've had it happen when the magazine or grip rub on the back of a wooden chair. It just serves as a reminder for me to exercise good posture.

I carry a Springfield subcompact XD 40. I IWB 5% of the time and OWB 95% of the time. I haven't had the issue that you describe, but I will watch out for it. My only issue is that place a small pillow behind my back when driving in order to keep the butt of the gun from imprinting on my seats. I hope you are able to correct the concern.
Re: Issue carrying and getting holes in shirts
I have had a similar problem. Since I carry IWB, I have holes wearing through my pants, just behind the vertical seam at 3-o'clock, about 3-4 inches below the beltline. This is the front sight and/or the edges of my barrel rubbing on the inside of the pants.
Another problem I had (but I fixed) was from the sharp edges of my spare mag base in my back pocket in a Remora mag pouch. I had holes wearing out on the pockets. I swapped the standard 15-round mag in my pocket with the 17-round (+2 extension) in my gun. The +2 extension replaces the sharp points of the base plate, and leaves a nice smooth edge which no longer rips my pocket.

Re: Issue carrying and getting holes in shirts
I check every mag I carry, and if needed hit with a needle file and a piece of 440 or 600 grit sandpaper on the corners for that very reason and to keep the inside corner from cutting me.Pawpaw wrote:Looking at a picture of that pistol, I think the most likely culprit would be the magazine floor plate.

Re: Issue carrying and getting holes in shirts
I lose a lot of t-shirts this way I always figured it was me hitting my gun on everything I was close to as I walk past it. Been 6-7 years and my body still hasn't adjusted to it being there so it gets banged on everything. To me the seatbelt comment makes a lot of sense also.

I thought the kydex material was rough on fabric.
