Re: Changing out daily carry rounds

Like any other discussion based on other personal preference, not much science to it, just feelings and physical observations. short of physical damage, set back bullet from repeated chambering, or case damage from extraction, chambering, hitting the ground .. its just preference.

Couple of times a year I shoot my carry mag, rotate my spare mag to the EDC and refill the spare.
Gives me peace of mind my EDC still reliable shoots my carry ammo, rounds that have been chambered and extracted a few times now are no longer on board.

Just for giggles, i also rotate the top round when i reload.. no science, just feelings. when i unload to clean, service, train...I'll take that chambered round, and load it first into the mag, leaving a non previously chambered round at the top of the mag. I saw military 5.56 rounds chambered and extracted hundreds of times with no failure when fired....same for 7.76, and 40mm HEDP

:iagree:

What he said!

I shoot all of my carry ammo 31 rounds of 9mm or 40 rounds of .45 at least once a year but no more than twice. I carry 3 mags, 1 in the weapon, 2 spares plus one in the chamber. No science that I know of behind it. You could get crazy and keep track of bullet set back, number of times a round is chambered, dropped, number of cycles on a mag, how long has the mag been loaded etc. That's all too OCD for me. I have at least 6 mags for every weapon. I carry three. Keep everything topped up all the time. and cycle all of my SD ammo once or twice a year. Mostly so that I am comfortable in how it shoots, feels, performs etc.

The only other thing is if I have a problem with a magazine it immediately becomes a range mag. I will not carry a magazine that leads to a failure to feed if everything else is working tip top.

Right or wrong I basically do the same things as E, Marquez in previous post. Rotate rounds in magazine after cleaning. Gun stays loaded otherwise. I'll usually fire them about once a year and replace with same once a year. Never had a failure. (Talking high dollar defensive ammo) When I first started CC I would use whatever ammo I had for target practice. Now I use the better stuff rated for self defiance.

Now that I've said that, there was a time with a revolver that I left too much oil in the cylinder. All five rounds failed to fire. Fortunately it wasn't an EDC. My wife carried it in a fanny pack when walking the dog or jogging. Oops! The oil over time migrated into the primers. I don't remember exactly what ammo was in it. Pretty sure it wasn't high dollar defensive ammo like I use now. A lesson learned for sure. It's a stainless cylinder also and really didn't need all of the CRP I failed to wipe out.
