IDPA Safety Officer (SO) Class at PSC
Gary Burris will be teaching an IDPA Safety Officer (SO) Class at PSC on Saturday, August 18, 2007. CLICK HERE for information on the SO Class. Please note that Gary's fee is $5, but there will not be a range fee at PSC. As noted on Gary's website, it will be necessary to get a student packet from IDPA.
I've spoken to a lot of people over the years who believed you had to be a veteran IDPA competitor to be a good SO. Perhaps there was some truth to this belief in prior years when the SO Class was only about 2 hours long and any other SO could teach it. However, the Class is now 8 1/2 hrs long, including 3 hrs. on the range. This means we can take someone with good gun-handling skills and train them to be an SO. So if you have a few matches under your belt, then consider taking this course and helping us with the PSC matches.
But we're not going to throw you into a match to run bay by yourself right out of SO school. We will let you work with an experienced SO for a match or two, perhaps more, until you are comfortable running a bay in a match.
Since we had to cancel the July PSC-IDPA match, I've received a number of PM's and emails from people wanting to help. In response, Marc got busy and contacted Gary to set up an SO Class, Gary agreed, and the rest is up to you folks. Please consider taking this class and signing up to SO upcoming PSC-IDPA matches. I can assure you that taking the course will not only certify you as an SO, it will also make you a better IDPA competitor.
To register for the SO Class, just send an email to Marc@TexasShooting.com
Thanks,
Chas.

Thanks for arranging this; and thank you to Gary for being willing to teach it.
Email sent to Marc. Let's hope we get a full, enthusiastic class!

I've ordered eight (8) student packets from HQ. So for the first 8 lucky attendees, just PM me that you've reserved your spot in the class through Marc, give me your mailing address and IDPA number, and I'll send you a packet as soon as I have them in hand. Postage is on me; you can settle up the $5 for the packet itself when we meet on the 18th.bobby wrote:Ok how do you get the Student Info pack for the SO class? I looked on IDPA's website and could not find it. I will take the class too.
Since the student packets are only five bucks, it sorta seemed silly to have HQ ship me just one. But if we run over 8 students (which I hope we will), individual packets have to be ordered from HQ via phone at 870-545-3886.

Three of eight SO student packets spoken for.
You can buy your own, but I bought eight of them for you...and you don't have to pay shipping.
If we don't get at least 10 future SOs in this class, I will be extremely disappointed.
Take a step to grow IDPA!
(Edited 7/30 to update available packet count.)

The eight SO Student Packets I ordered have arrived. Three are spoken for and are going in the mail today.
I'm changing my tack and considering these just a sunk cost, so the packets and the shipping are free...until they're all gone, of course. Five are left at the moment.
Register for the August 18 course by emailing Marc@TexasShooting.com, then PM me with your attendance confirmation, your IDPA membership number, and your mailing address. I'll send you the required student packet (free!) until I run out. If I'm empty, I'll let you know and you can contact IDPA HQ directly and buy your packet.

Just a note that I intend to make one more Post Office run no later than Friday, August 10, to ensure that any mailed packets get to you before the August 18 class. The packet contains a hardcopy of the slides used in the classroom portion of the training, so it makes a great in-advance study guide.

Is our start time Saturday 8:00 a.m.?
If someone attending needs a student packet and doesn't have one, I'll be bringing extras.

It was great class. Seven of us attended, and one was already a certified SO there for just a refresher with Gary. And we understood why. Gary Burris has done just about everything in IDPA since its inception, including SOing 8 of the 10 national championships. He's SOed just about everybody you can think of, from Bill Wilson, to Jerry Miculek, to Robbie Leatham. Needless to say, any hypothetical question we could come up with, he had actually seen and dealt with. There is no substitute for that kind of experience.
Many thanks to Gary for doing this. And to Charles, Marc, and PSC for hosting us.
If you shoot IDPA and get a chance in the future to take the SO course, I encourage you to do so. It not only benefits the sport by improving the depth on the bench, but you'll learn a lot in the process.
