The above link is to a detailed examination of multiple handguns that women tried, and commented upon.

Many times women will get the usual "buy a snubbie in .38" kind of advice. Not always the best gun.

This involved study found a variety of different handguns that women preferred.

Some of the top choices were a Sig P238, a Walther, Springer EMP in 9MM, and many others,
some with nice illustrations.

The 4 rules: 1. All guns are loaded.
2. Do not let your firearm point at anything you do not want to destroy or kill.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you intend to shoot.
4. Identify your target clearly, and what is behind it.

My wife is considering a new pistol, and plans to start looking by trying out the ones listed in that article.
