A dorm address is not a permanent address. Your (parents presumably) home address is your permanent address and would need to stay on your license. Or at least that is the way voting districts are decided. Now if you rent an apartment off of campus, that would be considered a permanent address and you would need to file a change of address. IANAL, but this is my understanding from trying to figure out voter registration when I left home to go to college.
BTW, SHSU and the Huntsville area will be glad to have another CHL in the area. I am an SHSU grad ('98) and still a Huntsville resident. Once you're here, drop me a PM, and we'll try to get together.
Moving to Huntsville to finish school, address change?

Here is my thinking. If you get stopped by the police for a traffic violation and they ask your address which address will you give? Thats what I would want on both my DL and CHL.Russell wrote:Sounds good. I will do that.
I will be renting an apartment off campus. Can other people verify that I will need to submit an address change? Will I still be able to carry with my old license before the new license arrives?
Do you want the hassle of having to argue to DPS that you didn't change your CHL address within 30 days because it wasn't your "permanent" address, whatever that is?

Never did like the term "permanent" address...
In the service we always had this "kick-back" in our service jackets that enumerated our "home of record" address...
I kept my DL in Texas, and never setup a residence (rental or otherwise) in California in the 5 years I was out there...Of course at the time I didn;t have any other credentials needed to keep updated...
The CHL adds an interesting twist on the requirement within those rules...
When in doubt, I'd call Austin and give them the situation and see what they say...
A temporary (2 years to me sounds like a long time) residence in Huntsville, over your "home of record" in College Station seems like an easy question for them to answer, to see if you need to change the address on your CHL...If you're not going to change the DL, then in this case should he change the CHL licence address???
That is a quandry to be in...

Yep...Russell wrote:I would think that having the CHL and DL address the same would be the preferred way if you consider your first address your permanent one... Is the address rules for the CHL different? I don't recall ever hearing anything about that
I'd give them a call, tell them your situation...I'm sure you'll comply in any regard to what they say you should do in this case...
I also believe they've run into a few situations similar to yours...
Let us know what they say...

Russell wrote:Okay. Gave em a call. They said they ask for the address on the CHL to match the address on the DL. So if my address in College Station is my permanent one, it needs to stay that way as long as my address on my DL stays that way.
