SCCY CPX-2 Own One? Pros and Cons Please!

Post by Abraham »

I do know they have a long trigger pull akin to a revolver, but some say it's smooth other say it stacks up.

What say you or any other criticism or benefit?

Thanks!!

I'm interested in this model to replace my yard gun, a Ruger LC9S.

The SCCY has greater capacity and is lighter, but like the Ruger it's an el cheapo, though according to 'some' (it's a mixed bag) it's a better quality 'el cheapo' if you will, so I'm trying to get some feedback from those on this forum.

Reading a review from someone I don't know can be helpful, but from someone here is far and way more credible.

Thanks!

See if your local range has one for rent... Like you I've read both good and bad... But as I get older I give less and less of a rats patootie about what others think, especially on firearms...

My daily carry is the Ruger LC9s, and my pocket carry when I don't want to strap on the holster is a Taurus Spectrum.... Love both of them and have NEVER had a problem with them....

If you ever have to pull it in a defensive situation, bet you won't even remember how the trigger feels.....

I'm not sure if it was the CPX 1 or CPX 2, but my mother-in-law had one, and it was prone to malfunction (soft primer strikes), and tended to cut your hand if you didn't grip it just right. Local range also bought one (pretty sure that one was a CPX 2). Range owner, his wife, and I all test fired several boxes of ammo through it. She was the only one who could get it to function properly.

Tex1961,

"If you ever have to pull it in a defensive situation, bet you won't even remember how the trigger feels....."

I'm sure you're right about that.

I would be willing to pay for a premium pistol, but I'm looking for the lightest 9mm and at 15 oz. the SCCY fits the bill. I have yet to find a premium to fit the bill. Plus, this is a yard gun exposed to saw dust, grit and other unhealthy stuff for guns, though to ameliorate that I keep it in a zipped rectangular pack.

There are zero rental places near me so eventually I'll slide by Cabelas and at least put one in my hand. Whether they'll be willing to let me pull the trigger I don't know. If they do that'd be good enough for me to make a buying decision.

From some of the reviews I've read accuracy is adequate out to 21'. That's plenty good enough. If bad people who mean me harm are farther away than that I'm not shooting...

Thanks for your input.

KC5AV,

Yikes, not good!

Some of the reviews mentioned this sort of thing while others didn't have a problem.

I'm going to have to talk to Cabelas and see if I can find a candid gun sales person regarding the CPX-2 and inquire as to what may be a luck of draw as to whether one CPX-2 may perform well and the next be unreliable.

Sigh...

Thanks!

Abraham, I have one and it would be fine if you wanted to shoot it sometime. I'm in the Athens / East Texas area.

Overall I think it is an excellent gun. Very lightweight and excellent capacity. The weight savings are in the frame and the mags, and the 'lower' components. The slide itself is pretty much standard weight for a compact. Not as light as a micro and not as heavy as a full. The weight balance doesn't hurt the shooting on it at all and if you don't limp wrist it, it shoots with very little recoil.

The recoil is (obviously) higher with +P rounds (And only the later versions of the production runs are +P rated) but still manageable. It shoots with significantly less movement / torsional force than my wife's S&W BG .380 and about even with the G43. More force than a 1911 in 9mm (but that should be expected) and about even with a 1911 in .45 (though I didn't shoot a .45 1911 immediately after/before my gun, just going on muscle memory). I did however shoot a 9mm M&P9 2.0 and I would say my gun has slightly more 'twist' with slightly less 'force', as in it wants to rotate more but has less force overall.

The build quality is excellent. I have no regrets there. I did have one issue and about 25 FTE's in the first 300 rounds that I contacted SCCY about. They let me know it was a known issue with some models based on a batch of ejectors. They mailed me a completely new slide (with everything already installed) and the fix was having the ejector pin about 1.5 ~ 2mm longer for earlier contact on the casing. I put another 600 rounds through the gun without a single failure to feed / eject, and am confident in carrying it. I do not doubt that upcoming training with about another 1000 rounds will confirm. Also, when they mailed me the new slide, they simply included a pre-paid postage return envelope for my current slide (which I presume they will factory check and replace the extractor). I have nothing but good things to say about their customer service and would recommend their CS team to anyone. Good to note: The guns have a lifetime warranty from any owner, new or otherwise. They didn't event ask how I acquired the firearm, as I owned it their warranties covered it. Thoroughly impressed.

The size is the only drawback. Due to a 'hostile work environment' (heh heh), I have to deep conceal. As such, a double stack just showed a little to much with my dressing style, so I now regularly carry the G43 on the weekdays and keep the SCCY for the weekends. The measurements are online and worth comparing to your current firearms to determine concealment. A few MM in the right place can be the difference in a recognizable bulge or invisibility.

I wish I had not gotten the version with a safety. The trigger pull is smooth and consistent (after the first 2-3mm of effortless travel) but not as smooth as an aftermarket timney or other similar top-of-the-line trigger. It is better than most glock triggers IMO. But, the pull is LOOOOOOONG. Like really long. Double action, 9-pound revolver long. A safety isn't necessary with this gun. Part of the impressiveness of this gun, though, is the long (and relatively heavy) trigger is smooth enough to be consistent. I am not in love with the safety. IMO it is the weakest aspect of the firearm. It doesn't have any real 'retention' to it, it can be flipped 'off' very easily, and doesn't do much for safety since I could even deactivate it with pulling my shirt or on the draw. I would get the version without the safety. As such, I STRONGLY recommend you go with the CPX-2. They are identical guns, (including internals) but the CPX-1 has an external safety that disengages the trigger pin from the hammer and the CPX-2 does not. Having shot both, the characteristics of the trigger are unchanged between the two.

Overall, considering the price and shoot-ability of the CPX-1/2, I would say it is a good budget gun for new CCL'ers or as a back-up or truck gun.

I haven't has soft strikes and inspecting the casings/primers after usage show a normal 1.0 ~ 1.5mm indention. Maybe even a bit too much. Its possible that this is an issue that isn't consistent throughout all production. Having said that, the customer service department is great in my experience, and could possibly send or replace the firing pin / housing if needed.

KC5AV brings up a good point about the slide. I have medium sized hands, smaller than most other 6'-1" men I know. Part of the reason I picked the SCCY is because it fit my hand like a glove. People with larger hands might not have good results. Definitely hold one (and preferably shoot one) before buying to measure the 'fit'. My friends with bigger hands than me were able to shoot it without getting into the slide, but they really had to watch the thumbs.

I bought one last week and put 250 rounds through it, no issues whatsoever. I was looking for a small back up gun and was looking at the Kel-tec p-11 model and a friend told me about the SCCY. I watch a couple of videos on it and it peaked my interest. I have medium hands and had no problem shooting it or with recoil, the trigger is long just like PTR said but felt pretty good to me. It's a straight shooter, and for the price, and for the no questions asked lifetime warranty; I don't think you'll find a better deal in that range.

I also own the non-safety version. I was looking for something lighter than my glocks/1911 for IWB for everyday carry while working outside. I like guns that are simple and well built, this seemed to fit the bill. A big plus was first shot at the range was a bullseye, so sights on mine were perfect. It fed flawlessly, although I admit I only ran a hundred rounds or so. Some wear on the slide (mine was the two-tone, silver over black) from sweat, etc but I expected that from the outset. Again, IMHO, a good tool for the purpose I had in mind. For me, the IWB (in an Alien Gear kydex) was very well concealed under a tucked-in Magellen fishing shirt. Another plus; both my 10 round magazines would hold 11!

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your generous offer, sadly I'm hundreds of miles away from your location.

Your review gives me much assurance regarding the SCCY pistol and their great customer service.

I thank all the rest who kindly posted their reviews on this pistol. Very helpful.
