Changing your mind - riding a bike....backwards.

Post by puma guy »

I often use a joking phrase with people "Do you want change your mind, OR keep the mind you have?" A very interesting video describes how difficult it can be. I remember that instant moment when I finally, balanced and pedaled on a bike after many failures and much frustration. My take away is how hard it is to change learned skills. Certainly it can be applied to other skills such as shooting. If you developed on your own or were taught wrongly it's a task to change. I don't know if that instant brain change happens as in bike riding, though. Bob Brister, the great outdoor writer and shotgunning champion and expert, in his book "The Art and Science of Shotgunning" wrote of a training technique using a BB gun and ping pong balls to develop the ability to hit consistently with a shotgun. Unfortunately, I didn't read his book until my 60's and as the guy in the video says old brains don't have the plasticity of young brains.

I watched the whole video hoping to see bb guns and ping pong balls... not I just want to try the backwards bike!

 I recommend Brister's book. He's considered the "father of Sporting Clays" in the United States. You can find the book on Ebay from 4 bucks up to $95. I messed up the title, though. It's "Shotgunning-The Art and The Science". I also included his obituary.

In the 2000's Federal spent much time and computer programming to develop a set up that proved exactly what Bob Brister was saying back in the 1960's about shot patterns.
