My understanding of URL suffixes is that if you are a profit-making enterprise, your URL must end in .com.
But if you are a non-profit or FYI kind of website, your URL will end in .org.
It seems that since nothing is being sold in the forum, by the forum itself, that .org might have been appropriate.
Is the .com OK since members sell firearms and things?
URL = Uniform Resource Locator by the way.
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment.

Why is our forum's URL suffix .com instead or .org?

I don't know why Charles made the decision, but .com URLs do not have to be profit making businesses, and non-profits don't have to be org.surprise_i'm_armed wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2019 3:27 pm My understanding of URL suffixes is that if you are a profit-making enterprise, your URL must end in .com.

Thank you Bill. That clarifies things.
If you'll notice in the link, the webpage creators committed a sin IMHO.
They use an insider acronym, SEO, without an explanation of what it is. Sure, once you read down the page a little further, you find out that it represents "Search Engine Optimization".
I don't know what the Chicago Book of Style has to say about it, but I always believe that an acronym's explanation should be provided the very FIRST time it's used.
Many publications irk me by using insider acronyms multiple times, before they explain what it is 5 paragraphs into its usage.
Rant off.

Re: Why is our forum's URL suffix .com instead or .org?
While I am thinking about journalistic style shortcomings, another thing I hate is when a company's financial results are given, the statement will be made that "sales figures for 2019 are x, up from y in 2018". I'm sorry, but my OCD (or DCO if you like it to be alphabetical!), works FROM 2018 TO 2019.
In a related situation, tables for stock prices, or any kind of stats, will usually be presented with "2019" on the left and "2018" on the right, if there's only 2 columns. In America we read left to right, and things that happened earlier should be on the left, not on the right. Sheesh. Readability please.

Re: Why is our forum's URL suffix .com instead or .org?
The .org domain was originally intended for non-profit, like churches, charities, etc. All of Charles domains are .com, like www.texasshooting.com. But like WildBill said, it really doesn't matter.

Thanks, Keith. I had no awareness of his other site until this post.

Yeah, way back in the dark ages the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was pretty strict about differentiating between types but now days anybody can get anything. Many organizations will buy all the suffixes they can get and just redirect all to the main URL.

Re: Why is our forum's URL suffix .com instead or .org?
Yep. Back when the three TLDs (top level domains) were .com .org and .edu that was it. No of this .info or .me craziness!jmorris wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2019 10:22 pm Yeah, way back in the dark ages the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was pretty strict about differentiating between types but now days anybody can get anything.
