How often do you re-lube?

Post by newTexan »

Hey guys,

Recently got back into TX after a long long (too long) bit of traveling around for work and thus back to the range. Quick question as I still feel pretty new to all this...

Let's say you go to the range, clean and oil the pistol, and put it in the safe. Now a month later you want to go shooting with it again. Do you re-lube before every range trip, or after a certain period of time, or what is your plan. Basically, if you haven't shot it, how often do you re-lube for either range time or daily carry?

Thanks!

The safe guns are wiped down about twice a year. My carry pistols are field stripped and clean after every range trip (about once a month) and if I don’t get one of my carry guns to the range then I field strip it wipe down and re-oil the needed parts about every two to three months.

If not careful you forget your EDC and you will have lent and whatever else built up in it.

I have been guilty of this one on occasion.

Bring oil with you but do nothing this time- go to range and shoot the heck out of it, to prove to your self that it can or can't go a month or 2 without cleaning/oil. Then going forward, clean and lube after range trips and if you go another month or so without shooting, pull the slide off, clean out any lint and re-oil. Eyeball it for lint build up at least weekly if you carry daily.

The reality is that a clean gun (unfired since last cleaning) can be de-linted in 3-4 minutes- so this "regular" maintenance isn't anything you need to set aside much time for. And if you are using an oil that dries up or migrates out of critical areas in a month- change to a different oil.

I started using gun grease several years ago and have had good results. I noticed it stays where I put it and it does not create as much crud build up as gun oil does.

I mostly use Ballistol or Breakfree CLP.

Question for the grease guys:
Do you keep the grease on the firearm or wipe it with a rag?
I ask because you can wipe grease with a rag and it will still penetrate into the microscopic pores of the metal unless you use solvent to remove it.
Just wondering how much grease you used and how much you wiped off.
Please know and follow the rules of firearms safety.

Every evning I completely inspect my weapon, clean, lube ect. Never know when your life is going to be threatened so why take the chance. It takes maybe 5 mins. at most plus I concealed carry the weapon so it seams to get some sweat being tx and all.

I don't really wipe it off. I usually just smear it thin across contact surfaces. I feel like less grease is more effective than gobs of it..

So not to derail my own question but I tend to use the Hoppes Lubricating Oil. It was what I started with and have never changed from it. Is there a much better oil that I should look at, or is the Hoppes ok? I hear a lot about gun grease too, but never tried it.

Cleaning and lubricating our self defense tools can be a very personal thing. For example, I must clean and lube my firearms after shooting or I will be awakened that night by the specter of Drill Sergeant (E5) Jett admonishing my laziness and disrespect. ;-)

I tend to fire 200+ rounds a month unless I have a class, then it's 500+ rounds. I had been using Hoppe's 9, but since April of this year I've been using Lucas Extreme Duty Gun Oil and Gun Grease. I've been pleased with the way both products stay on the pistol where the Hoppe's tended to run off. The Lucas products are more expensive, but I find myself using less. Looks like the 1oz of oil and 1oz of grease that I bought will last me the rest of the year. I'll re-evaluate when it runs out.

I’ve found that, with a Glock, de-linting is most easily accomplished by firing the gun. It’s kind of funny, actually.

I clean and lube after range trips.....most of the time. That’s with my EDC guns. The safe queens get lubed after range trips, and I check them maybe twice a year, but I don’t bother wiping down or adding more lube unless it obviously needs it. But I also control the humidity in my safe, so rust is less of a worry.
