Keep your CCW Clean

It's common practice but it never hurts to send out a reminder every once in a while to remind everyone (especially new LTC'rs) to break down your carry weapon and clean.. I'm generally pretty good at doing this at least once per month, but I've been remiss and have not broken it down in probably 2 1/2 months... As most of us know, a lot of lint, sweat, etc can get into the small moving parts and play havoc with everything.. I was noticing a lot of crud in the slide area and decided to do my due diligence and break it down and give everything a good wiping and oiling.. Now.. I'm not going to say that I wouldn't have gotten more than 1 round off, but, I dropped my mag and racked the slide and the round that's been sitting in the barrel for the past 2 months was a wee bit sticky coming out and I had to lock the slide back and nudge it out of the action... Anyway... Just a reminder to both myself and everyone else... Keep your CCW clean and oiled up....

A good reminder for several reasons. But hopefully people will shoot their carry gun often enough that they don't have to just clean it for lint and sticky dried up lube!

For all newer LTC'ers- (or anyone) be sure to incorporate the pencil test after you reassemble a carry gun, to verify it will function, without having to fire and foul it back up. Not my video, just first one I searched up.

Don't be concerned if it doesn't launch out like the video- depending on the age and density of eraser and shape of firing pin nose it may go just a little or may stick in the ceiling. (don't ask- they can) I prefer an UNSHARPENED pencil.

Are you saying the round was left in the chamber... as in the extractor didn't have a hold of it??? If so, you need to investigate that further, before you resume carrying it...

I clean mine once a month and wipe it down weekly with a silicon cloth. I’m happy to report my carry gun never has a lot of lint build up inside it. And I carry appendix. It does get sweated on all day some it’s a must to wipe it down. Like above said, I’d investigate why my extractor didn’t grab the round

Are you saying the round was left in the chamber... as in the extractor didn't have a hold of it??? If so, you need to investigate that further, before you resume carrying it...

Funny you should mention that... NO.. the round extracted, but didn't clear the chamber... maybe it was just me and didn't pull my slide back hard enough.. But that exact thought crossed my mind, so I loaded up some training rounds and everything worked just fine... Still, though lots of gunk built up just in the few months since I cleaned it... And yes.. I usually do try and run a few mag dumps through it every few months....

I am almost OCD about my carry guns, I break them down, once a week, pull a bore snake through the barrel, dry fire them, check for any loading/extractor issues. and wipe them down. I am the designated, armorer, for SWMBO carry guns, also. I do the same for my MIL, but not as often.
Probably overly cautious, but Sunday's after church are usually pretty slow anyway, so I make that my gun maintenance day.

Of course I clean them extensively, after any range session. That goes for any gun, I take to the range, before I put them back in the safe.

Since I go the range 3x / month, I clean my gun after every range trip. Every 3 months, tear the gun down the small parts and clean the places that can't be cleaned with when field stripping.

My real issue now is Ammo availability. My 4,000 round inventory is getting smaller and smaller because I don't have my weekly purchases.

I haven't fired a round since Covid hit and I reload. I'm saving it all for the coming apocalypse and I expect it will all get used.

I’ve been really bad about this for the past few years. I generally clean my guns after range trips, but I probably don’t clean my carry pistols more than a couple of times per year aside from post-range cleanings.

I’ve got to do better. I used to be pretty good about it.

I do a quick lube of the action every few weeks. According to the lack of malfunctions at the range, that is all I need. After range sessions, I usually do a quick 3 minute wipe down and lube of the guns. I only do lengthy cleanings if things look grimy after a range session, which is usually after 1000 or so rounds added up over time.

I haven't stopped shooting because I reload..... I guess if the apocalypse comes, and "targets" are shaped like my steel plates, I'll be ready!

I have to clean my M&P9 after each firing session or I cannot sleep. Drill Sergeant Jett will be screaming at me in my dreams, casting aspersions on my parentage and personal habits, and proclaiming my general worthlessness as a human being.

I don't remember the names of my school teachers, but SGT Jett is immortal and lives, rent free, in my head.
